Boksburg combines a scenic landmark at Boksburg Lake with architectural history and leisure activities. Terraces, lawns and trees shape the surroundings of the lake; near its southwestern corner stands St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, designed by Sir Herbert Baker. A 2021 article by the City of Ekurhuleni describes a rapids slide at Wild Waters on which visitors ride bodyboards. These different themes give you a basis for deciding whether scenery, architectural history or leisure should be the focus of your stay.
Scenery at Boksburg Lake
Boksburg Lake is surrounded by terraces, lawns and trees. The landscape impression is therefore shaped by more than the water: the landscaped surroundings are also part of the local scene. If you would like to get to know Boksburg through its landscape, this landmark offers a different perspective from the architectural history of the nearby church. The lake thus provides a distinct focus for planning your trip, without limiting your stay to a single attraction.
Church and architectural history
St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church is near the southwestern corner of Boksburg Lake and was designed by Sir Herbert Baker. It was designated a Provincial Heritage Site. It is dated to 1911; at the same time, the construction period is given as November 1911 to May 1912. The church replaced an earlier building made of timber and corrugated iron. Its design, designation and predecessor building offer different ways to explore the architecture and history of this structure. The dates retain both the stated year of construction and the construction period extending through May 1912.
Local history and Historical Association meetings
Boksburg was founded in 1887 as the administrative centre of the East Rand. The year of its founding and its function at the time provide a brief historical context for the town; the church, in turn, offers a closer look at a specific building and its history. Meetings of the Boksburg Historical Association provide another way to explore local history. Members meet at the Alan Woodrow Park Retirement Village in Boksburg on the first Saturday of every month except January. Meetings begin from 2 pm, with the programme starting at 2:30 pm. They include historical news and a talk or activity, followed by tea. If you would like to include a meeting in your plans, confirm the details with the association beforehand.
A different leisure perspective
Wild Waters adds a waterslide experience to the historical and scenic attractions. A 2021 article published by the City of Ekurhuleni describes a rapids slide in Boksburg where visitors ride bodyboards. If this particular slide is important to your travel plans, check its current setup before visiting.
When looking for a hotel in Boksburg, your main interest can be a good starting point. The scenery and local history offer a different focus from the leisure ride described in a 2021 article.
