Melville combines a monthly art mile with independent local businesses. Nearby Melville Koppies offer a different focus, with natural and cultural heritage, but access rules vary by area.

Art, food and local businesses

On the first Thursday of every month, up to 20 selected galleries, studios, restaurants, bars and community spaces open for the Melville Art Mile. The route runs through Melville and brings together art, music, food and culture. The number of participating venues is a maximum; which venues take part may change. So if you are planning your visit around the Art Mile, check the latest event dates and participating venues.

The Bamboo Lifestyle Centre offers a different focus: it brings together independent local businesses in Melville and has a contemporary South African theme. Its offering therefore differs from an event tied to the monthly art walk. The tenant mix may change; before making a special visit, check which businesses are currently represented.

Melville Koppies: trails and access rules

Melville Koppies lie close to Melville and are a nature reserve and heritage site of the City of Johannesburg. Rules vary by area. The central area is always locked; hikes or walks there are possible only with controlled access on Sundays from 8:00 to 11:30. Dogs are not allowed there. In the eastern area, walks are possible daily, and socialised dogs are welcome. Walks are also possible daily in the western area; however, they are recommended there only as part of scheduled hikes.

When planning, it is therefore important to decide which area you want to visit: the Sunday rule for the central area is not a general description of walks in the east and west. As operating guidelines may change, check the reserve’s latest information before your visit.

More culture and nature in City Of Johannesburg

The wider destination of City Of Johannesburg offers more cultural experiences. The Apartheid Museum illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid. Its permanent exhibition traces South Africa’s history from the dark days of oppression to a place of healing shaped by democratic principles. Constitution Hill houses South Africa’s Constitutional Court and is also a living museum that tells the story of the country’s journey to democracy. The two places thus offer distinct but related historical perspectives.

The Origins Centre’s interactive exhibitions offer another perspective on culture and history. They explore humanity’s origins in Africa and the development of technology, art, culture and symbolism, as well as a range of South African rock art traditions. Their broad subject matter differs from the focus on apartheid and the journey to democracy.

For a contrast to these cultural themes, visit the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. The 81-hectare green space is used by runners, picnickers and dog owners. The dam offers opportunities for canoeing and sailing; facilities belonging to a diving club are also located on the eastern shore. The gardens are open from sunrise to sunset and have parking at several entrances. As access arrangements may change, check the latest information before visiting.
