Golden Gate Highlands National Park lies in the gently rising foothills of the Maloti Mountains in the northeast of the Free State. For a trip to Thabo Mofutsanyane, it offers a clear focus on nature and culture: hiking, wildlife viewing, and scientific and cultural discoveries come together here.
The Maloti Mountains and wildlife
The park offers hiking in the Maloti Mountains. Visitors can discover 54 mammal species and 256 bird species in the park. At the Vulture’s Restaurant bird hide, you can observe vultures in their natural habitat. This brings together two ways of experiencing nature: walking through the mountain landscape and watching vultures from a purpose-built viewing point.
Hikes to suit different trail profiles
When choosing a hike, it is worth considering the trail profile and theme. Sections of the Brandwag Buttress Trail are steep; chains help hikers along. The Mushroom Rock Trail, by contrast, is unguided, not very challenging and suitable for small children. The Boskloof Trail is well suited to birdwatching and has diverse, lush flora depending on the season. The Holkrans Trail provides access to sandstone formations and viewpoints over easy terrain. Another hiking trail associated with the park is the Rhebok Hiking Trail. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Science and Basotho culture
The Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre adds a scientific perspective. As an interactive facility, it provides insights into palaeontology, archaeology and geology. These disciplines offer different perspectives: palaeontology studies fossil traces of life, archaeology examines material evidence of past societies, and geology studies the structure and development of the Earth.
At the Basotho Cultural Village, the focus is on cultural experiences: a traditional healer offers insights into African spirituality, while a chief offers visitors Mqombothi, a sorghum beer. Alongside the scientific interpretation, visitors can therefore gain spiritual insight and try a specific drink. Confirm whether Mqombothi will be offered during your visit before travelling.
More discoveries in the Free State
The Eagle Route is a scenic drive through the Free State, linking landscapes, history and adventure along the Drakensberg. The Sandtone Estate Steam Train Museum is located on the Ficksburg section of the route; Clarens offers art galleries as part of its visitor experience. Ficksburg is also known for its annual Cherry Festival. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the dates for your intended travel year. Art and the railway museum thus complement the park’s nature and cultural themes with further regional points of interest.
In the Free State, the Vredefort Dome offers another geological highlight: it is the oldest and largest known meteorite impact structure on Earth. It contains high-quality, accessible geological exposures, where various clues to the complex impact structure can be observed. As another natural contrast in the Free State, the Free State National Botanical Gardens are home to over 400 plant species from the region, more than 50 reptile species and over 140 bird species.
