The Mkhanzi River shapes Kiddʼs Beach in more than one way: the Kiddʼs Beach River Walk follows its course, while its lagoon is suitable for canoeing and kayaking. Goliath herons or fish eagles may be seen along the way. This means you can plan both a route by the river and an activity on the water; the coast also offers a surf spot and a wind-dependent hike.
Beach and water
Kiddʼs Beach is a surf spot, and conditions vary. The lagoon of the Mkhanzi River is suitable for canoeing and kayaking. The two water sports offer different experiences: surfing is affected by changing conditions, while the lagoon is the specific setting for canoeing and kayaking.
For the 2024 summer season, the municipality listed Kiddʼs Beach Main Beach among the beaches patrolled by lifeguards. Kiddʼs Beach also received Pilot Blue Flag status, not a full Blue Flag award.
Riverside trails
The Kiddʼs Beach River Walk follows the course of the river. Hikers may spot Goliath herons or fish eagles along the way. For anyone interested in birdwatching, the route offers the possibility of a sighting along the river, though the birds are not guaranteed to be there. The river is also a landmark in the area’s landscape.
Another trail leads from Filia’s Place through bushland, across the Mkansti River and under the R72. If you plan to take this route, check local conditions before setting out. Its described course includes both a river crossing and a passage beneath the road—specific points you can take into account when preparing.
Coastal hike and low tide
A coastal hike runs from Kaysers Beach to Kiddʼs Beach. It is dependent on the wind and requires you to get to the starting point. Wind conditions and transport to the start are therefore key planning considerations for this hike. This distinguishes it from the riverside trails, whose described routes either begin at or follow the river.
Nearby, Mermaid’s Pool is at Second Beach (Leonards Bay). The natural pool becomes visible at low tide. If you would like to visit, the tide level is important when planning your timing: unlike the riverside trails, the pool’s visibility explicitly depends on low tide.
The river and the local landscape
The Mkhanzi River may form a boundary on the eastern side of Kiddʼs Beach. Its name comes from the Xhosa word “Umkhanzi,” meaning “reed.” Together with the riverside trails and the lagoon, which is suitable for canoeing and kayaking, the river gives your stay a clear point of reference.
