Velenje combines Lake Velenje with a Renaissance castle, municipal art collections and insights into mining history. For planning, it helps to consider these highlights separately: the lake is all about the bathing area, views and events, while museums and galleries offer a different focus. This lets you choose whether water, art, history or a specific event date will shape your stay.

Lake, beach and Vista

At Vista on Lake Velenje, visitor facilities include a 14-metre-high observation platform and a long pier. Vista is next to Velenje Beach and also serves as a venue for cultural, sporting, entertainment and tourism events. The programme changes. So if you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the latest event dates.

The beach is the designated bathing area on the lake. Lifeguards and other trained staff help ensure safety there; seasonal operating conditions may change. The beach is also a starting or finishing point for the Ĺ TREKNA cycling route. Swimming and cycling are therefore two different ways to plan a visit to the same place. If you intend to swim, it is worth checking the conditions for your chosen date.

Castle and collections

Velenje Castle is one of the best-preserved castles in Slovenia. It acquired its present-day Renaissance appearance in the 16th century. The castle houses the Velenje Museum, which presents eleven permanent museum and gallery exhibitions. Topics include an African collection, mastodon remains and contemporary Slovenian art. The exhibitions may change.

The castle chapel also explores a historical connection: it displays a small collection of Baroque church art from the former Church of St George in Ĺ kale. Subsidence caused by mining meant that the church had to be demolished in the mid-20th century. The collection thus connects religious art with a history shaped by the effects of mining.

The House of Minerals features more than 12,000 different minerals from the private collection of collector and expert JoĹľe Rihtar. It also has a geological collection of precious, semi-precious and decorative stones. Those interested in mineral diversity will find both an extensive private collection and these additional types of stone here.

Gallery and town square

The Velenje Gallery is located in a modernist building in the town centre, on Tito Square. Its focus is contemporary art from the Ĺ alek and Upper Savinja valleys, Slovenia and Europe. The collection comprises nearly 1,000 works, including Slovenian modern and contemporary art, prints, photographs, drawings and an international painting collection. Its geographical perspective thus extends from the surrounding valleys to European artists.

Tito Square is designed for gatherings, cultural events and celebrations, and is surrounded by Velenje’s most important buildings. The monumental statue of Marshal Tito dominates the central square complex. From the statue, the Experience Socialism retro walk leads to the former Workers’ Hall. It includes interactive stations and the chance to taste a socialist workers’ meal. The stations and the stated endpoints give the walk a different character from a visit focused mainly on museum collections.

Mining and recurring events

The Slovenian Coal Mining Museum takes visitors 160 metres underground. Across 20 scenes and with 15 puppets, it presents miners’ lives; the tour ends with a ride on the underground train. Reservations may be required. If you plan to visit the museum, check in advance whether a reservation is needed.

The Pika Festival, Slovenia’s largest children’s festival, takes place in Velenje every year. In the town centre, the programme includes theatre, puppet and dance performances, concerts, creative workshops, exhibitions and interactive experiences. Dates and programme items change each year, so check the latest information if the festival is important to your trip.
