In Ruše, cultural themes range from sculptures and historic churches to industrial history. Wine trails, cycling and activities on the Drava offer different ways to explore. Which of these shapes your trip can help you plan when to visit and where to stay.

Sculptures, Churches and Industrial History

Ruše has a trail dedicated to more recent cultural monuments. A total of 27 sculptures were created between 1976 and 1982 as part of four sculptors’ colonies and symposia. These dates give the focus on sculpture a clear timeframe.

The Church of the Name of Mary (Marijinega imena) also brings together different architectural and decorative periods. It was built in 1387; its rich stucco decoration was added later in two stages. The choir and the first two chapels were decorated in 1710. In 1721, the second pair of chapels and the nave followed, decorated by master Peter Zaar.

The water tower is part of the former Ruše Nitrogen Factory complex and was built in 1917 for the factory’s needs. Glazerjeva domačija offers a different perspective on local history: it is the birthplace of Janko Glazer and bears a commemorative plaque. Those interested in art and collections can visit the Mirko Vovšek Gallery and the museum collection on the first floor of Dom kulture Ruše. The collection presents the life and personal belongings of Mirko Vovšek, farming objects, and works from the Pohorje glassworks. The selection on display may change; check the venue’s current information before visiting.

Wine Trails and Event Dates

The Ruše Wine Road is a 2.5-kilometre circular route through the vineyards, passing 24 wine cottages. Six chapels are dedicated to the vine, fertility and Ruše’s viticultural heritage. As well as winegrowing, the route highlights its cultural significance.

The traditional Martinovanje festival has been held every year on the Ruše Wine Road since 1983. The “Letni oder Ruše” festival takes place every August. Its programme includes concerts, theatre performances, social events, exhibitions and food; the contents vary with each edition. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the current dates and programme.

Around Ruše: Pohorje, Trails and the Drava

Near Ruše, the Lobnica stream flows over the Veliki Šumik and Mali Šumik waterfalls through the ancient forests of Pohorje. Also nearby, the Church of the Virgin Mary in Smolnik on Pohorje was built between 1859 and 1861. These nearby natural and cultural attractions complement Ruše, but are distinct from the trails in the town itself.

The Ruše Mountain Trail has ten checkpoints, including Ruše and the Šumik Waterfall. There are also numerous mountain, long-distance, interpretive and themed trails in the Pohorje Regional Park and its surroundings. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Drava Cycling Route passes through Ruše. There is also a network of circular cycling routes on forest, gravel and asphalt roads in the Ruško Pohorje and Ruše area. Together, the routes total 212 kilometres and are suitable for conventional bicycles and e-bikes. As route details may change, it’s worth checking the latest maps.

Kayaks, canoes and SUPs can be rented for water sports on the Drava in Ruše; check availability before your trip. The Ruše Sports Park also holds rowing sessions on the Drava every Thursday from May to October. For this seasonal activity, the latest programme information can help you choose your overnight stay dates.
