Steel sculptures around the town, exhibitions at Ravne Castle and several different trails give Ravne na Koroškem a varied character. When planning your visit, it is worth considering culture and physical activity separately: the sights tell stories of art and history, while each route has its own focus and trail characteristics.

Forma viva and castle exhibitions

The Forma viva steel sculptures are among the sights of Ravne na Koroškem. They were created at nine international sculptors’ symposia held between 1964 and 2014. In total, 36 sculptures were installed in urban areas of Ravne na Koroškem, Prevalje, Mežica and Črna na Koroškem. You can explore the art theme further at Ravne Castle: since 30 November 2016, a permanent exhibition there has focused on the creation of the Ravne collection of outdoor sculptures. It was conceived in 1964 as part of the national cultural event, the International Forma viva Sculptors’ Symposium.

Another historical focus is the castle chapel. Since April 2005, it has housed a permanent exhibition of Roman stone monuments: on display are stones from the Zagrad site near Prevalje, as well as individual pieces from the municipality of Ravne na Koroškem. The Roman burial ground presented in the lapidarium dates from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Together, the two castle exhibitions take you from the 20th-century sculpture collection to archaeological evidence from Roman times. As visiting arrangements may change, check current visiting options before your visit.

During “S punklom po Formi vivi!” visitors view the Forma viva sculptures scattered around the town with a snack in hand. If you would like to plan for this format, check in advance whether it is currently offered. The historic Turške šance earthworks are also nearby: hidden in a forest above Kotlje, they have a small, overgrown island at their centre.

Trails with different focuses

The Mladinska pot Ravne na Koroškem is an educational recreational trail for those seeking nature and relaxation. Its 14 recreational learning stations also cover topics from the time when trim trails were first developed. If you are interested in another route description, the Pot na Šteharski vrh is consistently very well marked and includes sections along forest tracks and meadows. This hiking route starts at the bus stop in Ravne na Koroškem.

The Malgajeva pot has another clearly described route: it starts at the cultural centre in Ravne na Koroškem, follows a forest road towards Javornik and ends at Trg in Ravne. The Ravenska čebelarska pot, by contrast, is specifically classified as an easy route and can be walked or cycled. When choosing, you can compare the stated characteristics without treating the trails as alike: learning stations, trail marking and surface, or the specified difficulty and permitted use, each offer a different focus.

Cycling, sport and scenery

For a longer bike ride, PICIKL KOŠTA is a loop route exploring Ravne na Koroškem and its surroundings and introducing traditional Koroška dishes. The dishes are described as being made with local, fresh and high-quality ingredients. The culinary cycling route starts in Ravne Castle Park. It offers an easier 20-kilometre option and a more challenging 25-kilometre option; the two distances give you a concrete way to compare the tour options, but do not indicate how long the ride will take. Bike Park Poseka has two cycling routes, which are free to use. Check current access before visiting.

Ravne Sports Park also brings together a variety of sports facilities: these include an outdoor municipal swimming pool with an Olympic-size pool, a covered winter swimming pool, a modern athletics stadium, sports fields and sports halls, as well as a tennis centre. The sports park is set in the natural surroundings of the town and the Meža Valley, between Peca and Uršlja gora. The facilities therefore combine a wide range of sports with this described landscape setting. As facilities and operating hours may change, check the current options in advance.

December hike and practical information

The Planinsko društvo Ravne na Koroškem mountaineering club organises the “Čez goro k očetu” hiking march every year in the second half of December. In even-numbered years, it takes place at night; in odd-numbered years, during the day. For the night hike, participants meet in the evening in Ravne na Koroškem. As exact dates and arrangements vary, check the details for the relevant edition if you are including the march in your travel plans.

For planning your own routes, TIC Ravne provides cycling and hiking maps; the availability of printed materials may change. Mežica and Črna na Koroškem are other destinations you can explore separately.
