At Pesnica station, apples from Slovenske gorice were transported to Vienna in large quantities. This history connects the town with the railway; the fruit market, routes and wine offer further topics to explore during a stay. If you want to plan your travel around the traditional autumn festival, bear in mind that its dates vary.
Settlement Pattern and Railway History
Pesnica pri Mariboru has a compact settlement area along the road from Maribor to Šentilj in the Cirknica stream valley. At the same time, the town has retained the character of a sprawling, dispersed village. The settlement corridor and the town’s expansive character are therefore two distinct features.
The development of Pesnica is closely linked to the construction of the Southern Railway in the mid-19th century. The railway crossed the Pesniški Viaduct through the Pesnica valley. Near Pesnica, the Dolnja Počehova Viaduct is designated a cultural monument of local importance. It was built as part of the Southern Railway to cross the marshy Pesnica valley.
On Foot, by Bike or on Horseback
The Pesniška pot starts at the fruit market in Pesnica. With breaks, it takes about four hours to complete on foot—a useful guide when planning your walk. The Kolesarska pot po obronkih Pesnice is considered easy, though the climbs make it somewhat more strenuous in places. For the walk, the approximate duration is therefore the main point of reference; for the cycling route, you should also take the climbs into account.
Horse riding is available with Jože Frajzman along the Pesniška pot; check current availability before your trip. Also on the route and in the Pesnica area is the Sadjarski center in Gačnik, which is considered worth a visit. This lets you combine different interests with the options mentioned, without assuming that both routes require the same amount of time or level of effort.
Fruit, Wine and Events
Every autumn, the traditional “PRAZNIK SADJA, VINA IN CVETJA” festival takes place at the fruit market in Pesnica. The dates vary, so check the specific dates if you are planning a trip especially for the event. The “Galerija okusov” is also a recurring wine and culinary event in Pesnica.
A cultural programme with set dates was held in 2026 for the 80th local holiday of KS Pesnica: titled “Pesnica skozi čas,” it featured cultural events, exhibitions, concerts, hikes, sports gatherings, expert talks and social events from 1 May to 13 June.
A 2017 travel guide mentions guided cellar tours and wine tastings at Klet Pesnica by prior arrangement. It describes the vinotheque as offering a selection of white and red Galantes wines to taste and buy. If you plan to take advantage of these options, ask in advance about booking and the current selection.
