Ormož brings together a castle gallery for contemporary art, Neoclassical paintings, old park trees and a wetland in the Drava River ecosystem. When planning your visit, you can choose different focuses: the castle and Grajska pristava offer art and architecture, while the Ormoške lagune and the hiking route offer their own nature experiences. Prlekija cuisine and local wines are also part of the guided tourist offerings.
Castle Culture and Architecture
Since 1995, Ormož Castle has been a centre for contemporary cultural developments. The castle gallery hosts contemporary art exhibitions. You can also see Neoclassical paintings by Austrian painter Alois Gleichenperger, dating from 1810, in the castle. This brings together two distinct artistic references: contemporary exhibitions and historical painting.
Another highlight is Grajska pristava Ormož. It preserves Tuscan stone columns, six pilasters and a barrel-vaulted hall on the ground floor. Pilasters are flat, pillar-like features on a wall; a barrel vault spans a room in an elongated, rounded shape. These terms help distinguish the architectural details: the pilasters articulate the wall, while the vault defines the hall. Grajska pristava also features the exhibitions “Od igrače do žare”, “Srednjeveška plastika z ormoškega območja” and “Lonec lončarja hvali”. The exhibitions may change.
Castle Park and the Ormoške lagune
An orange tree, a tulip tree, a ginkgo and other exotic plants grow in Ormož Castle Park. A municipal guided tourist offering includes walks through the park, among its several-hundred-year-old trees. When the weather is fine, pottery workshops are also held there or in the castle’s small courtyard; you can work at a potter’s wheel. The tree walk and pottery offer different experiences: one focuses on the old trees, the other on working with clay yourself.
The Ormoške lagune are a man-made wetland covering 55 hectares in the Drava River ecosystem at Ormoško jezero. The nature reserve is an important breeding ground for waterbirds. Twenty-nine breeding waterbird species have been recorded there; further observations may increase the number of species. Visitors can follow an educational trail with observation towers and visit a visitor centre; guided excursions are also offered. The reserve is open to the public, and its facilities have also been adapted for groups with special needs. Check access conditions before travelling.
Hiking, Cuisine and Wine
The Ormoška planinska pot passes through the municipalities of Ormož, Sveti Tomaž and Središče ob Dravi. It is 67 kilometres long, rated difficult and has an elevation gain of 1,482 metres. These figures describe the distance, difficulty level and ascent; this is a longer hiking option, not a short add-on to a castle visit. If you plan to hike it, also check the current trail conditions.
A municipal guided offering combines Prlekija cuisine with high-quality local wines. Another connection to wine is Ormož’s town vineyard: the distinctive wine “županovo vino” is produced there, and the Šipon grape variety is traditionally harvested there. Together with the art and nature offerings, this gives you a choice of different interests for the day, without requiring you to fit every focus into the same visit.
