A distinctive feature of Krško is the way it combines historic cultural sites with a hands-on approach to energy topics: at the Svet energije Visitor Centre, you can explore an interactive exhibition alongside an experiment room. The Old Town can be explored on foot or by bicycle; Krško also lies on both banks of Slovenia’s longest river. When planning your visit, you can prioritise cultural sites, visits with fixed appointments, and time for outdoor activities according to your interests.

Old Town, museum and art

The Krško City Museum is housed in a complex of three buildings. These include the oldest surviving buildings in Krško, first built in the late 15th century. The permanent exhibitions are dedicated to Janez Vajkard Valvasor, Josipina Hočevar and Vladimir Štoviček. Specialist lectures, creative workshops and other events are also held regularly. The museum thus connects the town’s history with a programme of events that goes beyond the permanent exhibitions.

The Mencinger House preserves a fruit-drying room established towards the end of the 19th century. It points to the importance of fruit growing in Krško and its surroundings. The Krško Gallery is housed in the former Church of the Holy Spirit and presents temporary art exhibitions created specifically for this exhibition space. The museum, historic house and gallery each have a distinct focus: the town’s history, a preserved agricultural facility, and site-specific art.

Libraries and historical insights

At the Valvasor Library, visitors can learn about the first Slovene translation of the Bible, which is almost half a millennium old. The Capuchin Library of Krško is a museum library and a cultural monument; its contents are accessible to the public under special conditions. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. Among its notable holdings is the library’s oldest book: a Latin dictionary by Calepin dating from 1502. If you plan to visit both libraries, note the difference between a visit by prior arrangement and the special access conditions for the library’s collection.

Josipina Hočevar had the Hočevar family mausoleum built as a family tomb in 1886, after her husband’s death. Guided tours are offered on the second Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. As these are recurring, set times, it is advisable to confirm the tour schedule again before travelling.

Energy and planning your visit

Svet energije is an interactive multimedia visitor centre about energy and the energy industry. Alongside the exhibition, there is an experiment room where visitors can explore experiments independently, covering electricity, electrical engineering, magnetism, electrostatics and electromagnetism. The topics range from fundamental phenomena to technical applications. The exhibition and hands-on experiments offer two different ways to explore the subject of energy.

A visit to the Krško Nuclear Power Plant follows a different arrangement. The plant receives visitors who have registered and are part of an organised group; the visit date must be agreed in advance with the Public Relations Department. The visit includes a presentation on plant operations and a guided tour, which takes place by bus or on foot. Arrange the date in advance and check the visiting conditions again before making plans around your visit.

Cycling and hiking

For cyclists, the Municipality of Krško operates the free “Krčan” bike-sharing system, with eleven bicycle stations at various locations across the municipality. The number and distribution refer to the entire municipality, not just the Old Town. There are also approximately 34 kilometres of cycling infrastructure across the municipality, helping cyclists travel more safely in traffic. For a specific ride, the “Na Grmado” route starts and ends at Krško PZA; it goes from Krško up the climb to Sremič and continues to Grmada. Check route conditions before setting out.

The hiking options vary in difficulty and format. Technically easy, well-maintained and marked trails have up to 200 metres of elevation gain and are particularly suitable for families with children. There are also moderate options in the mid-mountain region: circular routes, multi-day long-distance trails and one-day hikes. These details can help you weigh up the difficulty and time required without treating the different types of hike as equivalent.

Getting around and culinary highlights

Krško can be reached via the motorway connecting Ljubljana and Zagreb. The culinary offer focuses on homemade cured meats, indigenous wines and Krško chocolate. Together with the museums, libraries and outdoor activities, these provide a range of themes for your stay; you can plan individual visits and tours according to the schedules and conditions specified for each.
