Kočevje offers several ways to spend your stay: cultural history in the city centre, walking trails and nature observation, as well as cycling routes ranging from easy to challenging. This will help you decide whether to devote most of your time to the city, Lake Kočevje or cycling tours.

City History and Art in the Centre

The Kočevje Regional Museum has been housed in the Šešek Hall since 1963. The building was constructed in 1938 as a Sokolski Hall and is an important monument to Slovenian statehood. The museum cares for the movable cultural heritage of the municipalities of Kočevje, Kostel, Loški potok and Osilnica and presents it to the public.

In the centre of Kočevje, on the Rinža River, stands the parish church of St. Bartholomew. Built in 1903 in the Neo-Romanesque style, it is adorned with works by Slovenian artists Slavko Pengov, France Kralj and Stane Jarm. The easy Staneta Jarma Trail also passes through the city centre, combining a walk with outdoor artworks by Stane Jarm.

Walking Trails with Different Themes

“A Walk Through Kočevje” is a short, easy themed trail around the city. It passes 23 buildings and two bridges. The app for this trail shows a 3D reconstruction of the former Kočevje Castle. The route therefore combines a walking tour with architectural landmarks and a historical look at the former castle.

Rožni Studenec is a shorter educational forest trail. It is suitable for children and shares information about life in the forest. The trail begins in Marof in Kočevje, leads through the forest to the Rinža and the cold spring Mrzli studenec, and then returns to the starting point. This sets it apart from the themed trail around the city through its forest route and focus on nature.

Lake Kočevje: Nature Trail and Summer Activities

Lake Kočevje is artificial and was created between 1973 and 1978 in the basin of a brown coal mine. A three-kilometre nature trail runs around the lake and offers the chance to observe numerous plant and animal species. In summer, people swim, surf, sail, dive and fish there. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check the specific conditions in advance.

Cycling from Family Rides to Challenging Tours

The MTB Trail Center Kočevje is just outside Kočevje, in Dolga vas. Its eleven trails have varying levels of difficulty and total almost 20 kilometres. The centre also has a paved pump track, offering cyclists of all ages a safe sporting experience. Družinski krog is an easy cycling route for short family outings around Kočevje.

The other routes also vary in their course and difficulty: Kolesarska pot Stojna runs above Kočevje through the Stojna Mountains, away from traffic roads; technically, it is moderately difficult. The challenging Kolpa–Rog route leads from Kočevje to the Kolpa and back through the forests to Kočevje. Eleonorina pot begins in Kočevje. The cycling route Pot do koče pri Jelenovem studencu starts at a car park on Podgorska Street and connects Kočevje with the summit of Stojna.

Getting There by Train

Kočevje railway station is on the outskirts of the city; the centre is about a ten-minute walk away. Regular passenger services to Ljubljana resumed in 2021. Please check the current timetable for your journey.
