There are several ways to plan a stay in Izola: explore the Mediterranean-influenced old town, learn about its fishing and seafaring history, enjoy the coast, or discover trails on foot or by bike. You can decide whether you’d like to learn about a particular topic on a guided tour, spend time by the water or actively explore a route.

Old Town and Fishing History

Narrow streets and Mediterranean architecture shape the character of the old town. Izolana displays models of traditional boats, a restored pasara boat, a scale model of Izola and a projection about the town’s history. The one-hour guided tour at Izolana covers Izola’s fishing, seafaring and shipbuilding traditions. A guided tour of the old town explores its Venetian heritage and fishing traditions. The two experiences have different focuses: the museum also covers seafaring and shipbuilding, while the old-town tour includes the Venetian heritage. Tour dates may change; check in advance when they take place.

Two Ways to Experience the Coast

Izola has eight beaches stretching over five kilometres. You can explore the coast on a SUP and reach all eight beaches. This gives you the choice of experiencing the coast from the beach or from the water. Check the current availability of SUP equipment in advance.

Trails in Izola and the Surrounding Area

The former coastal road between Izola and Koper is now a cycling and walking path. The Parenzana has a different story: once a narrow-gauge railway between Trieste and PoreÄŤ, it now runs through Izola as the Health and Friendship Route (D6 or D8). It has a moderate difficulty rating of 3/5. Its mostly wooded paths and gravel roads are suitable for mountain biking. Since the rating may be adjusted, check the latest information before setting out.

A half-day hike from Izola into the surrounding area offers views across the heart of Istria to the sea, as well as of the Alps and Dolomites. For planning your schedule, the one-hour Izolana tour and this hike offer different time commitments: a compact cultural visit and a longer excursion into the surrounding area.

Market and Wine Traditions

Refuscus Mundi – World of Refusco – takes place every year in Izola, at Manzioli Square and in Manzioli Palace. It is dedicated to wines made from the Refusco grape variety. The seasonal “Ruba sz moje njive” market gives local farmers in Izola the opportunity to sell their produce. For planning purposes, note the different schedules: the market is seasonal, while Refuscus Mundi takes place annually. Specific event dates and participating wineries may change; check current event information in advance.

Explore Independently

If you’d like to explore Izola without a guide, you can get a town map from the tourist information centre; the centre also points out places of particular interest. This lets you choose what to focus on. Guided tours are an alternative if you’d like to learn about Izola’s old town or its fishing and seafaring history.
