Church and Climbing Area
St. James’s Church stands in the centre of Dol pri Hrastniku at an elevation of about 310 metres. The carefully designed Neo-Romanesque building has a cruciform ground plan and a fully vaulted interior. The style, floor plan and vault describe different aspects of the building: its architectural direction, its overall layout and the design of the church interior. For travellers interested in religious architecture, St. James’s is therefore a specific cultural landmark.
Another focus is the Pod Škalo climbing area, visited by Slovenian and international professional and recreational climbers. This places architectural heritage and climbing as distinct reasons to choose the destination. When planning a stay, you can first decide whether the church or an active pursuit is the main attraction.
Festivals Throughout the Year
On 28 June, the local community celebrates its holiday in memory of the founding of the OF in Dol. Dolska noč is held annually in the centre of Dol pri Hrastniku; in recent years, it has taken place in front of the Dolanka sports hall. On the last Saturday in June, locals gather to enjoy food, drinks and music.
Kramarski sejem is another event with a specific date: it takes place every year on 10 March, Martyrs’ Day, in the courtyard and car park in front of the Dolanka sports hall. There, you can buy dry goods, dried fruit, clothing and seedlings. A blessing of motorcycles and motorcyclists is also held annually in the car park in front of the hall. The market therefore offers a different focus from Dolska noč: here, the emphasis is on goods for sale, while Dolska noč is about gathering over food, drinks and music.
For choosing when to visit, there are three clearly distinct dates: the market on 10 March, the holiday on 28 June and Dolska noč on the last Saturday in June. Check the date rule for the relevant year if you want to travel specifically for one of these events.
Sport, Culture and Hiking
Dolanka sports hall is available to schools, clubs and sports enthusiasts, as well as for competitions and events. Cultural activities take place at the cultural centre in Dol pri Hrastniku. The church and cultural centre represent distinct cultural landmarks: St. James’s for religious architecture, and the cultural centre for cultural activities. Together with sports and events at Dolanka, they offer a range of themes to explore during a stay.
One starting point for the Sovretov pohods is the car park in front of the Dolanka sports hall in Dol; from there, the hike takes about an hour and a half. With a specific starting point and approximate duration, it can be scheduled as a separate block of time in your day’s itinerary.
