The Rašica disappears into a system of ponors at Ponikve—a striking introduction to the area’s karst landscape. Nearby, historic mills, distinctive architectural features, and a carnival custom reveal different facets of Ponikve.

Karst Features and the Course of the Rašica

The Rašica Ponor at Brdavsovem is designated a natural monument and lies along a municipal hiking route. Marketova jama is another notable karst feature: it is connected to the underground course of the Rašica and opens into a mostly dry riverbed. These descriptions draw attention to different manifestations of water—the underground course and the riverbed at the surface.

Another distinctive feature appears during high water. At such times, the Rašica extends its above-ground course through a dry riverbed to the settlement of Predstruge. This course is explicitly associated with high water. Visitors interested in the landscape can therefore consider not only the ponors but also the river’s changing course, without assuming that it is always visible above ground.

Architectural History and Local Culture

Domačija Gačnik is a well-preserved complex comprising a house and a mill on the Rašica; the complex bears the date 1833. Another historical landmark is Brdavsov mlin, also known as Ta novi maln. It was built in 1870 by Janez Adamič and stood immediately beside the Pasnica Ponor. The house, mill, and ponor connect architectural history with the named water features, without implying that the buildings are in use today.

Other buildings make their own mark. The Kapelica Gospe zdravja was built in 1935 to a design by architect Jože Brodnik of Kompolje, in the Plečnik style. In the village center stands the Gothic Cerkev sv. Florjana, with gilded Baroque altars and a vaulted painting by Postl. Nearby, the Brinski skedenj has carved wooden columns dating from the second half of the 19th century. Kolenčeva hiša is also among the noted examples of local architecture, with its finely crafted, well-preserved ceiling beams.

The Ponikovske mačkare offer another expression of cultural heritage: the carnival custom in Ponikve in Dobrepolje includes elements of folk theater. In 2015, it was added to Slovenia’s Register of Living Cultural Heritage. The custom includes a house-to-house procession every year on Shrove Tuesday. If you would like to include this date in your travel plans, check the current details locally in advance.

Trails and Nature Watching

Ponikve is associated with many well-maintained walking, strolling, and cycling trails. They are suitable for walks, recreational activities, jogging, Nordic walking, and cycling. The themed Brodnikova pešpot is a circular route. Separately, a trail runs along the Rašca stream; its diverse vegetation includes Carniolan lilies, yellow irises, and snowdrops.

The trails described offer different starting points when choosing an excursion: the Brodnikova pešpot is clearly identified as a circular route, while the trail along the Rašca stream focuses on vegetation and the plants named above. Which option suits you better depends on whether you are looking for a circular walk or a trail with a focus on natural history.
