The Drava Cycling Route and Ĺ trekna meet in Dravograd. This makes the town a prominent reference point for cycling trips; at the same time, paths lead through the forest and along the lake, while the manor house, museum and church offer cultural destinations. Your areas of interest may therefore shape your choice of accommodation and activities.
Cycling routes and regional orientation
The Drava Cycling Route runs from the ViÄŤ border crossing through the centre of Dravograd, across the bridge to Bukovje and onward towards Trbonje. This makes it possible to follow the route using specific landmarks, from the town centre to the onward journey. Check current surface and access conditions before setting out.
Ĺ trekna is also part of the regional cycling network. The 35-kilometre cycle path runs through the Mislinja Valley and the Huda Luknja Gorge; it is fully paved and separated from other traffic. These features apply to Ĺ trekna, not the Drava Cycling Route. Cyclists can also make use of bus and train connections in Dravograd. As connections and rules for taking bicycles on board may change, check them before travelling.
Forest trails and lakeside routes
The Dravograd–Grad Forest Educational Trail is a circular route from the town through the forest and past the old castle. It is considered easy and suitable for a wide range of hikers. The Pot za srce recreation trail offers a different route: it leads from the Dravograd Health Centre uphill to the old castle, then downhill to the Drava and Dravograd Lake, and along the banks of the Drava back to the Health Centre. Those looking to compare trails will find different highlights here: forest and castle on one route, and a changing landscape of ascent, lake and riverbank on the other.
The Bobrčkova učna pot educational trail runs around Dravograd Lake. At seven stations, the beaver introduces plants and animals that live in and around the lake. This gives the circular route a natural-history focus. At the end of the trail, visitors are invited to the Karavanke Geopark information centre in Bukovje Manor. There they can see the exhibitions “Treasures of a Restless River” and “Dravit – A World Traveller from Dravograd”.
Wetland, birds and culture
Dravograd Lake is a wetland ecosystem with islands and reed beds. More than 150 species of waterbirds find refuge and nesting grounds there; future surveys may update the species count. Themed trails around the lake also offer opportunities for birdwatching. The area thus combines a clearly defined nature theme with educational trails, without limiting the outing to a single route.
The Baroque Bukovje Manor adds a different dimension. The Dravograd Museum there features a permanent exhibition about the Slovenian War of Independence in Koroška in 1991; the history of the noble Kometer family is also presented at the manor. The museum also explores the history of the town and its surroundings, from the past to modern times. Dravograd is also home to the important Romanesque Church of St Vitus.
The “Gestapo Prisons” collection is housed in five former prison cells in the basement of the Dravograd municipal building. Visits are possible only by prior appointment; individual visits are not possible. Check the visiting conditions in advance.
