Skalica combines architectural history with wine-making traditions and excursions in the surrounding area. A Romanesque rotunda combines defensive and chapel functions, alongside churches, exhibitions and galleries. Cycling and hiking trails, a nature trail and a seasonal outdoor pool offer other ways to explore. You can choose between architecture, culture and outdoor activities for your trip.

Romanesque and Gothic Architectural History

The Rotunda of St. George is originally Romanesque and was probably built around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. Its upper section is connected to a fortification and served a defensive function; the lower section served as a chapel. This layout combines two distinct functions in one building.

The Franciscan Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary is a Gothic building dating from the mid-15th century. The Franciscan monastery includes a cloister courtyard and a gallery in the cloisters. The Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel tells another story of architectural change: in the Late Gothic period, it was transformed from a single-nave church into a three-nave basilica. Together, these examples showcase different architectural forms and changes, rather than focusing on just one period.

Churches, Exhibitions and Views

The Dom kultúry also offers an architectural point of comparison: the Art Nouveau building has retained its original form since 1905. It houses a permanent exhibition of the Záhorie Museum and the Júlia Korezsku Gallery. Exhibition displays may change, so check in advance what will be on view during your visit.

The Jesuit Church of St. Francis Xavier preserves historic stucco decoration, parts of frescoes, an entrance to the crypts and an altarpiece that ranks among the largest in Slovakia. An exhibition on the history of printing traces the beginnings of printing in the area to a printing press founded by the Jesuits in the early 1670s. The exhibition in the Pharmacy of the Brothers of Mercy features restored furnishings from the mid-18th century and historic pharmacy objects. Exhibition displays here may also change.

The tower of the Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel offers views over Skalica and the surrounding area. The viewing platform is reached by 126 wooden steps; access arrangements may vary. If this view is important to your plans, check visiting options in advance. The restored Pilárik Brothers' Mill is open to the public. Its opening arrangements may also change, so it is a good idea to check in advance.

Cycling Routes, Hiking Destinations and Nature

Cyclists can take routes from Skalica to the Morava River, the Baťa Canal and Zlatnícka dolina. Marked hiking trails in the surrounding area lead, among other places, to Zlatnícka dolina, Čupy, Mlýnky, Chvojnica and Vrbovce. The starting points differ: the cycling routes mentioned start in Skalica, while the hiking trails connect destinations in the wider area. Check route conditions and markings before setting out.

At the Skalica fishponds, the nature trail starts at PerĂşnska lĂşka. The trail is 500 metres long and has eight stops. Nearby, in ZlatnĂcka dolina, there is also a public outdoor swimming pool with three pools. Facilities include swimming, beach volleyball and sports equipment rental. The pool is open seasonally; check whether it will be open during your travel dates when planning your visit.

A boat trip could also be part of your stay: a public excursion service on the Baťa Canal was planned for 2026. The trip could include the Skalica–Strážnice route and return, passing through a lock. Dates and operators may change, so check the details before planning.

Wine and Local Specialties

Skalický rubín is a wine from the Skalica wine-growing region and a blend of Skalická frankovka, Svätovavrinecké and Modrý portugal. The surrounding hills are home to more than 500 vineyard cottages used for processing and storing wine. Wine is therefore not only a regional product, but also part of the cultural landscape described here.

Another local specialty is SkalickĂ˝ trdelnĂk. It is prepared traditionally in the black kitchen of the Franciscan monastery. Opening arrangements may change; check visiting options in advance.
