Valaská Belá combines protected landscapes with a strong tradition of craftsmanship. If you are weighing up nature, glassmaking and textile art for your trip, you will find a range of options here—from hiking and cycling tours to museums and traditional folklore performances.

Nature, Protected Areas and Tours

The Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area was designated in 1989. Its character is shaped by forests interspersed with mountain meadows. The private Rysia Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of the municipality of Valaská Belá, covers 30.49 hectares and is under the highest, fifth level of protection. The Nitrica is also part of the local natural landscape: locally, the river is called the Belanka; its source lies below Homôlka at 900 metres above sea level.

Valaská Belá offers good conditions for agrotourism as well as scenic hiking and cycling tours. This lets you make the landscape a focus of your trip without limiting your stay to a single activity. The information about forests, mountain meadows, protected areas and the river offers a range of points of interest for anyone interested in nature and landscapes.

Glassmaking and Textile Crafts

Handmade glassmaking (Ručná sklárska výroba) was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovakia in September 2025. At the Sklený sen open-air museum, visitors can watch glass being shaped and blown by hand using traditional techniques. Visits must be arranged in advance because the furnace needs to be heated before glassworking can begin. Check the current visiting arrangements before you travel, too.

At the Museum of Linen, Weaving and Embroidery, visitors can weave fabric on traditional looms. Exhibits include handmade dolls in various sizes, colourful rugs, and tablecloths, doilies and placemats associated with folk traditions. Visits should be arranged as far in advance as possible; confirm visitor information before you arrive. This makes it easy to distinguish the two experiences when planning: at Sklený sen, the focus is on watching glass being worked, while at the textile museum it is on weaving and crafted products.

Folklore and Architectural History

The Belanka folklore group takes part every year in the summer and winter folklore festivals of Upper Nitra. It also presents traditional programmes for Shrovetide, during the carnival parade through the municipality, at the raising of the Maypole, on Mother’s Day and in Christmas performances. Belianska embroidery was worked in three ways, all of which were also known in the surrounding area.

The Neoclassical Church of St Michael the Archangel was built in 1800 on the site of an older Renaissance-era religious building, which was first mentioned in 1572. Its tower was incorporated into the new building. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its purpose. If you would like to include it in your travel plans, check locally for visiting opportunities.

A Winter Travel Option

At the Homôlka Ski Centre, skiers can use ski slopes served by three dedicated Tatrapoma lifts. Snow conditions and operating status vary, so check whether the ski area is currently open before you travel. Chata Homôlka offers accommodation and full-board meals. Confirm availability before your trip. This makes it possible to distinguish the winter offering from the museum visits and nature-related activities without assuming that all of these options are available at every time of year.
