For a trip to Pružina, cultural history and nature offer different points of interest. In the village centre, the Calvary of Pružina stands on a gentle hill in the grounds of the parish church of St. Žofia. Other attractions include the geologically formed Pružinská Dúpna Cave, hikes to the Strážov Waterfalls and walks in the surrounding area. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between a visit to the village centre and activities that require arranging a guided tour or allowing more time for the journey.

Calvary and Parish Church

The church of St. Žofia was originally Gothic and was extended with a presbytery in 1759. The Calvary is located in the grounds of the parish church, so sacred architecture and the history of the Stations can be explored together here. Its position on a gentle hill in the village centre gives the Calvary a clear connection to the heart of the village.

Originally, the Calvary comprised 11 Stations with 18 depictions. It includes seven paintings by J. B. Klemens from 1863 and four by K. Švestka from 1880. These figures describe different aspects of the ensemble: the original number of Stations and the paintings associated with artists' names and dates. Visitors interested in cultural history will find here not only the development of the parish church but also specific details about the Calvary's artistic design.

Cave and Visiting

The Pružinská Dúpna Cave was formed by the long-term erosion of Mesozoic limestone by underground water. It is also a geological point of interest: the cave tells the story of a process that acted on the rock over a long period. Bats mainly use it as a winter roost—another aspect of its natural environment that contributes to the character of the site.

The cave entrance is reached from the Pružina-Priedhorie part of the village via the Karol Brančík educational trail. A guided tour can be arranged with the chairman of the Strážovské vrchy Speleology Club; plan to arrange it in advance. The main passage, which is more than 300 metres long, was open to the public as part of the event on 30 June 2024. As access conditions may change, it is advisable to check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

Hikes and Waterfalls

Pružina can serve as a starting point for hikes to the Strážov Waterfalls. The hike is estimated to take about 3.5 hours; the duration may vary depending on conditions and route choice. Near Sedlo pod Strážovom saddle, take the turn-off from the yellow-marked hiking trail to the waterfalls. As trail markings may change, check them before setting out.

The Strážovský Stream rises in the vicinity of Pružina. After 100 metres, it cascades over rock ledges to form two waterfalls: the Upper and Lower Waterfalls. In addition to these hikes, there are also opportunities for walks in the surrounding area. This lets you choose between a general walk and a hike with an approximate duration, without assuming that one route suits every outing.

Further Cultural Attractions

The museum exhibition in Pružina includes a memorial room. If you would like to include it as a fixed part of your itinerary, it is best to check visiting arrangements in advance. Fašiangy in Pružina are also associated with a home slaughter in a domestic setting. If you are planning your trip around this, check the latest event details beforehand, as they may change before your visit.

There are therefore several different interests to consider when choosing your stay: the Calvary and its art history, the cave's geological formation and natural environment, and hikes and walks in the surrounding area. If you plan to take a guided tour or hike to the waterfalls, factor the relevant arrangements or approximate duration into your travel plans.
