Above Kostolec stand the rock towers of the PP Bosmany natural monument; nearby are the Kostolecká tiesňava gorge and hiking trails through the landscape. The village’s history also has several tangible points of reference: Peter Jilemnický worked here as a teacher, and archaeological finds date back to the Stone Age. When planning your trip, you can choose between rocky landscapes, hiking, cycling and cultural history.
Rock Formations and Gorge Views
The PP Bosmany natural monument was designated in 1994 and covers an area of 7.335 hectares above Kostolec. It consists of three rock towers and a rock massif behind them, rising to a height of 659 metres. The natural monument offers views of the Manínska tiesňava and the Kostolecká tiesňava gorges.
The Kostolecká tiesňava gorge is located near Kostolec. It is about 500 metres long, covers nearly 30 hectares and has been a nature reserve since 1970. The Kostolecká tiesňava gorge is located near Kostolec; from PP Bosmany, you can see the Manínska tiesňava and Kostolecká tiesňava gorges.
Explore on Foot or by Bike
A 16-kilometre hiking route leads from Považská Teplá to Súľov. It passes through the Kostolecká tiesňava gorge, Kostolec and Vrchteplá. This makes Kostolec part of a longer connection, not just a destination marked on the map: the route continues as far as Súľov. If you are interested in this hike, you can use the places mentioned as landmarks for the route.
Route 2305 offers a cycling alternative: this blue-marked, easy MTB leisure trail is 17 kilometres long and includes sections on asphalt and gravel. It passes through the Kostolecká tiesňava gorge and then continues to Kostolec. The route is considered easy and manageable for families with children. The two routes are similar in length, but differ in mode of travel, course and surface. So when choosing, first consider whether you are looking for a hike to Súľov or an MTB trail to Kostolec.
Before setting out, it is advisable to check the latest information on trail conditions, markings and surfaces; hiking conditions and route surfaces can change.
Traces of Local and Early History
Peter Jilemnický worked as a teacher in Kostolec from 1932 to 1936. A memorial plaque and a bust of the writer stand in front of the former school building. This place connects a clearly dated period in his biography with a tangible memorial in the village.
Archaeological sites in Kostolec contain traces of settlement dating from the Upper Palaeolithic, around 22,000 BC, and the Neolithic, around 2,000 BC. These dates mark widely separated phases of early settlement. A Late Stone Age dwelling site was located at the edge of a rock face beside the road to Kostolec. Objects found there include pottery, a loom weight, copper spirals, radiolarite and obsidian.
The obsidian found in Kostolec comes from the Vihorlat area. It points to long-distance contacts among the local population as early as the 3rd millennium BC. The individual finds thus offer insight not only into life at the dwelling site, but also into connections across greater distances.
