Slovenská Kajňa lies in the southern part of the Ondava Highlands, on the shore of the Malá Domaša Reservoir. Nature, outdoor activities and local history offer different focal points for planning a trip: various plant species grow in the Ondava floodplain, birds can be observed seasonally near the reservoir, and marked trails offer options for hiking and mountain biking. Regular events and a church with historicist and pseudo-Gothic features add to the character of the village. You can focus on these themes individually rather than cramming every activity into a packed day plan.

Plants and birds around Slovenská Kajňa

The warm Ondava floodplain within the municipality is home to, among other species, rezeda farbiarska, nevädza rozložená, kotúč poľný and ibiš lekársky. Svíb drieňový also grows within the municipality. This species is legally protected, and its flowering is seasonal. The waters of the Ondava near the reservoir and downstream offer another connection with nature. Among other species, stolístok klasnatý, škripinec jazerný, šarina morská and červenec kučeravý grow there; aquatic vegetation can vary depending on the season.

Flocks of wild geese can be observed around the Domaša Reservoir during the spring and autumn migrations. During the breeding season, you can also observe western marsh harriers, grey herons, purple herons, white storks and black storks at the reservoir. The plant species occur in different habitats, while birdwatching is seasonal.

Events and architectural history

The Kajňanská desiatka race takes place every year in Slovenská Kajňa. Its route runs from Slovenská Kajňa below the Domaša Dam, around the balancing reservoir, through Malá Domaša and back to Slovenská Kajňa. The route may change for individual editions; if the race is the reason for your trip, check the route for the relevant edition. A St Nicholas arrival celebration, accompanied by an angel and a devil, is also held annually. Check the dates of the respective events when planning your visit.

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity was built in 1925 on the site of an older church, in the historicist style. Its tower features pseudo-Gothic elements. The building’s history and its two named stylistic features offer a cultural focus alongside nature and outdoor activities.
