Malcov lies in the valley of the Večný potok and Veľký rybný potok streams. The surrounding ridges also shape the cadastral area: to the northeast, it extends into the Ľubovnianska vrchovina, while part of the Čergov range lies to the south. The Ondavská vrchovina occupies the central area. Several named mountain regions thus meet in the landscape.

Walks and Landscape

For summer walks, there is a route along the Veľký rybný potok and a shorter route by the Večný potok. The colder season brings a different condition: when there is enough snow, Malcov offers a wide selection of cross-country ski trails. The availability of trails therefore depends on sufficient snowfall.

The named heights also offer different landscape features. A hornbeam forest stands on Stoličná hora, while birch groves can be found on Veľká hora and Humbark. These places and their vegetation add specific features of the surrounding landscape to the views of the two stream valleys.

Church and Chapel

A notable building in the town is the Gothic church “Chrám Stretnutia Pána.” It was originally built in the first half of the 14th century. Part of the original perimeter masonry has survived, as has the tower with a Gothic window. Its stone tracery is set in the window jamb. The building’s history and surviving details belong together: the date points to the church’s origins, while the masonry, tower and window identify specific features of the building today.

The chapel “Kaplnka Narodenia Presvätej Bohorodičky” stands on Hurka Hill. A church indulgence festival is held there every year in September. Check the exact date of the festival before travelling.

Local Culture and Cuisine

The singing group “Malcovčanky” preserves local cultural traditions and folk songs in the Šariš dialect for future generations. It performs at folklore festivals in Malcov, the surrounding area and abroad. The folklore group “Javorina” performs mainly dances and songs based on folk-song motifs. Both groups give local folklore a place of its own, with their stated focus ranging from dialect songs and cultural preservation to dance and singing.

The historic June Midsummer custom included gathering medicinal and other herbs. Tied into little bundles, they were laid out around the church to be blessed. Local cuisine also has its own named specialities: mačadlo with mushrooms and baked kiški from the slaughterhouse kitchen are among Malcov’s culinary specialities.

Malcov as a Place to Stay

A first-class road runs through Malcov towards Bardejov, Stará Ľubovňa and Poprad. You can explore the town through several different interests when planning your stay: summer walks along the streams, cross-country skiing when there is enough snow, the landscape features of the heights, and the area’s architectural history and folklore. This lets you shape your stay around whether nature, local culture or both are central to your trip.
