Zlatno lies on the southern slopes of the Tribeč Mountains and combines local history with hiking and cycling options. When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: a themed hiking trail, the ruins of Čierny hrad and a challenging MTB route each offer a different kind of day out. The history of gold panning in the Stránka stream and the local museum also give the village its own distinctive themes.
Landscape and protected areas
The northern part of Zlatno lies within the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area, where protection level 2 applies. Part of the municipality also belongs to the Tribeč Special Protection Area for birds, which is part of the Natura 2000 network. These natural attractions complement the village’s historic sites and offer another focus for planning a trip.
Gold panning and local history
The origins of Zlatno are associated with gold panning in the Stránka stream. A document from 1424 recorded that Mikuláš Forgách was granted the right to pan for gold in the sand deposits of this stream. The local history of gold panning is thus connected both to the origins of the village and to a specific medieval right.
The local museum presents the history of the municipality through photographs and household and agricultural tools. One room is dedicated to the geographer Michal Lukniš, regarded as one of the founders of modern Slovak geography. The museum therefore offers a different focus from the history of gold panning and the attractions in the surrounding landscape.
Čierny hrad and trails around Zlatno
The ruins of Čierny hrad, near Zlatno, date back to the late 12th century. The remains stand on the summit of a conical hill, 568 m high, on a side ridge of the Tribeč above Zlatno. Historically, the castle served as a watchtower between the castles of Gýmeš and Hrušov.
The Tajomný chodník Tribečom trail starts in Zlatno next to the Môj obchod shop. There are six routes to choose from: three cycling routes and three hiking routes. Once downloaded, the audio guide also works offline; on the yellow route, it guides visitors from Zlatno to Čierny hrad. A puzzle game is set up along this route. The hiking trail is 6.5 km long and takes about 2.5 hours.
An educational trail commemorating partisan resistance connects Zlatno with the former partisan village of Skýcov. Since 1988, hundreds of people have walked the partisan trail between Zlatno and Skýcov each year to honour the heroes of the Slovak National Uprising. This trail links local trip planning with a specific historical commemoration.
Cycling routes and getting there
Route 049 – Tribečská hrebeňovka is a challenging MTB route for experts. It is 78.5 km long and includes sections on trails and forest tracks. Above Zlatno, it continues towards the Javorový vrch area. The green cycling route 5115 – Sľažany–Zlatno–Solčany runs through the Tribeč Mountains and past Čierny hrad. When choosing a route, you can therefore distinguish between a designated expert route and another route that takes in the castle.
Regular bus services from Nitra and Zlaté Moravce go to the centre of Zlatno. The bus stop is right next to the Môj obchod shop and the starting point of the Tajomný chodník Tribečom. If you are travelling by bus, check the current timetable before setting out.
