A flat lowland, a dense network of canals and a settlement history that began after the 1920 land reform: Lipové brings landscape and cultural themes together in a small area. The natural surroundings of Ostrovné lúky and travel options from the surrounding area also offer practical pointers for planning your trip.

Landscape Between the Plain and the Canals

Lipové lies on the Žitný ostrov plain, in a flat lowland at an elevation of 105 to 109 metres above sea level. Its cadastral area is flat and deforested, and covers 1,058 hectares. Its underlying geology includes gravel and sand from the “kolárovskej formácie”, layers of fluvial Danube deposits, and alluvial and floodplain soils that are locally saline. A relatively dense network of canals also runs through the area. The canal-rich landscape is well suited to rural tourism.

The Bodza–Lipové oxbow lake, also known as Zsemlekes, is one of Lipové’s most valuable tourist sites. If you would like to include it in your visit, check access arrangements locally.

Natural Surroundings and Outdoor Activities

Lipové’s cadastral area is part of the Ostrovné lúky Natura 2000 site. This open lowland habitat is highly important for the breeding and survival of the red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus). The steppe, forest-steppe and agricultural landscape also provides suitable living conditions for the lesser grey shrike (Lanius minor) and the tawny pipit (Anthus campestris). Check the current visitor rules for Ostrovné lúky before your visit.

The lowland terrain and comparatively light traffic on local roads make for very good cycling conditions. Exploring the landscape and cycling therefore offer a different focus from the village’s history and architecture. This profile of the area is not just about individual buildings, but also about the open countryside criss-crossed by canals.

A former gravel pit in the cadastral area, right next to the municipality of Zemianska Olča, was converted into CARP PARADISE, a fishing venue for recreational fishing. As conditions can change, check the current terms and conditions before your visit.

Settlement History and Architectural Traces

Lipové was established after the 1920 land reform under the name Hodžovo. Settlers from all over Slovakia founded the settlement. Later architectural traces include the Protestant bell tower, built in the 1920s.

The Kálnokyovská kúria and its associated barn on the Terem farmstead date from the 19th century. The complex is heavily dilapidated. The typical architecture of Lipové also includes semi-detached houses and the barns standing beside them in Rakotáš. Access to individual buildings may be restricted. These details help put the different historical elements into context: the bell tower dates from the 1920s, while the two buildings on the Terem farmstead date from the 19th century.
