Turany combines a nature and history trail with churches, a museum and public memorials. The Turany–Černík nature trail is an easy, self-guided loop for pedestrians; church buildings and exhibitions offer insights into different aspects of local history. Two specific details are useful for planning your trip: the nature trail is accessible year-round, and visits by organised groups to the museum can be arranged through the town office.

Turany–Černík Nature Trail

The Turany–Černík nature trail lies at the foot of Malá Fatra National Park. It is an easy, self-guided loop for pedestrians, focused on nature and history. The railway station or the square in front of the town office can serve as starting points; the first information panels are located at these points. This gives you two specific places from which to begin the loop. The self-guided format and its two themes make the route a standalone way to combine nature and history during a stay in Turany. Its year-round accessibility means you do not have to plan your visit around a particular event date.

Churches and Architectural History

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Gall (Kostol sv. Gála) is listed as a national cultural monument. The listing includes the church, its bell tower, the church cemetery and the surrounding wall. Its building history includes two dates: the church was built in 1300 or 1304 on the remains of a Gothic chapel dating from around 1157. The chapel is therefore the older historical reference point; the two possible dates refer to the later church building. The church also houses a rare Gothic altar of St. Catherine, which was reportedly brought from Spišská Kapitula. This reported origin retains its historical uncertainty.

The present-day Evangelical church building was constructed in 1933 on the site of a Toleration church built in 1786 and was consecrated on 6 May 1934. The building history clearly distinguishes the earlier church, the later building and its consecration. Together with the medieval origins associated with St. Gall, it shows that the history of Turany’s churches is not confined to a single era.

Museum and Memorial Sites

The local museum is located in the cultural centre on Budovateľská Street in the south of Turany. It preserves documents about the town’s history and present, and also displays a collection of local fauna and flora. The permanent exhibitions cover Old Turany, nature, fish and fishing, and Miloš Alexander Bazovský and Turany. Other topics include the history of skiing in the Turiec region, historical technology, clothing from the past and the history of sport; there is also a children’s area. Visits by organised groups can be arranged through the Turany town office by phone at +421 917 216 268 or by email at kultura@turany.sk.

The public monuments also commemorate different things. A monument featuring a bust of Miloš Alexander Bazovský stands in the town centre; a monument in the square commemorates the victims of the Second World War. Their focus is therefore clearly distinct: one monument features the bust of a named person, while the other is dedicated to remembering the victims of war.
