Fačkov lies in the Rajčianka Valley, at the transition between the Strážovské vrchy and the southern part of the Little Fatra. There are several different focuses to choose from when planning your trip: the hiking route over Kľak, activities at Fačkovské sedlo, and the village’s history and traditions. You can tailor your stay to nature, outdoor activities or local history.

Kľak: Protected Nature and Hiking Route

Kľak is designated a National Nature Reserve and is subject to the fifth level of protection. The Kľak site of European importance (code SKUEV0240) covers 85.71 hectares and includes the cadastral areas of Fačkov and Vrícko. Kľak provides habitat for large predators such as bears, wolves and lynx.

The hiking route over Kľak begins at the car park at Fačkovské sedlo and leads to Fačkov. It is 12 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 549 metres and takes about four hours and 30 minutes. Meadows and forest alternate along the way; the trail is well worn. The time given is an estimate, and trail conditions can vary by season. Check them before your hike.

Activities at Fačkovské sedlo

The Fačkovské sedlo ski resort has four ski lifts and seven ski runs with a total length of 5.8 kilometres. There is also a children’s lift with an easy ski run, as well as a ski and snowboard school. Lessons are available for children and adults, from complete beginners to advanced skiers and snowboarders. Night skiing under artificial lighting is also available. You can choose among different activities, including the runs, lessons and evening skiing.

Cycling is another activity at Fačkovské sedlo: a 15-kilometre route passes through the local natural surroundings. Along the route are several rest areas and information boards about local wildlife and plants. The signs add information about nature to the ride, while the rest areas are also part of the route’s described facilities.

Church, History and Traditions

Fačkov is first mentioned in written records as a settlement in 1351. The Church of St Nicholas dates from the 17th century and was given a Baroque makeover between 1788 and 1792. It is a single-nave building with a projecting block tower and Baroque windows fitted with wrought-iron grilles. The dates distinguish the church’s construction from its later Baroque makeover. Fačkov’s women’s folk costume is also part of the local cultural history: it included a white, gathered skirt, an apron made of blue-printed fabric and embroidered white sleeves.

A 2018 municipal profile reports that a folk group accompanies the Christmas Mass in Fačkov every year with accordion music and singing. It also notes that a folk group sings Slovak folk songs and traditional songs from the municipality, collected and shared by older generations. If you would like to see a performance, check in advance whether one is currently scheduled.

Food and Getting There

There is a bus stop at Fačkovské sedlo, served by a bus route running between Žilina and Prievidza. Check the current timetable before travelling. Also at Fačkovské sedlo, Salaš Kľak serves traditional Slovak cuisine made with regional ingredients. Dishes include Bryndzové halušky, Gazdovské halušky, Strapačky and Pirohy. As menu details may change, check the current selection if you have a particular dish in mind.
