Rock arches, a nature trail through the protected area and a medieval castle ruin give a trip to Súlov a clear focus. The landscape can be explored through its rock formations and trail details; the castle, church and memorial room offer further historical perspectives. For planning, it is worth checking the trail length, elevation gain and the different historical dates.
Rocks and the Nature Trail in the Súľovské skaly
The Súľovské skaly National Nature Reserve covers 543.23 hectares of protected area and 281.77 hectares of buffer zone; it was designated in 1973. Weathering shaped the Súľov conglomerates into rock towers, pinnacles and arches. The layers of Súľov conglomerate near Súlov are more than 500 metres thick. The rock layers are therefore as much a part of the landscape as its striking formations.
The nature trail runs through the most interesting central part of the protected area and leads to the Gotická brána. This 13-metre-high rock formation, with its distinctive shape, resembles a Gothic portal. The circular nature trail is 4.2 kilometres long, with 300 metres of ascent and 300 metres of descent. The estimated walking time is one hour and 40 minutes, excluding breaks. Terrain can affect the actual duration. When planning your time, bear in mind that this estimate does not include breaks and that the walking time is approximate.
Castle Ruins and Historic Sites
You can reach Súľov Castle on foot from the village of Súľov-Hradná via red-marked hiking trails or the green-marked nature trail through the Súľov Rocks. The medieval castle ruin stands at an elevation of 660 metres. Its first written mention dates to 1470—a date recorded in historical sources, not necessarily the year the castle was built.
Another historic landmark is Hrádok. It stands on a steep hill above the old Minarovský mill, before the entrance to the Súľov Gorge. Its settlement is dated to the 9th to 11th centuries. Hrádok was declared a national cultural monument in 1967 and a natural monument in 2001; these dates refer to different designations.
The Súľov-Hradná Memorial Room is located in the centre of Súlov. Its exhibits include a historic living room, local folk costumes, household objects and tools, old photographs, and early evidence of technological progress. The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Súlov dates from 1616 and was renovated in the 18th century. The historical record thus includes both a specific construction year and a later structural alteration.
Šarkania diera Cave is also part of the area’s cultural history: finds from the Eneolithic period, dated to the period from 2900 to 1900 BC, were discovered there. The artefacts are kept at the Slovak National Museum. This dating makes the cave finds a different historical reference point from the medieval castle or the church.
A Cycling Route as Another Option
The yellow-marked Súľov–Vrchteplá route is designated for cycling. It is 4.5 kilometres long, has 200 metres of elevation gain and is classified as a recreational route. At 4.2 and 4.5 kilometres respectively, the nature trail and cycling route are similar in length, but cater to different activities. You can therefore compare the two details according to your preferred way of getting around.
