Modra brings together several distinct themes: ceramics, the history of Ľudovít Štúr, a preserved town gate, archaeological traces, nature and wine. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose what to focus on: should the emphasis be on crafts, local and regional history, or perhaps an excursion to archaeological and scenic destinations? These varied highlights give Modra a diverse character without requiring you to follow a fixed itinerary.

The ceramic tradition and its different facets

The majolica tradition in Modra dates back to the founding of a ceramics industrial school in 1833. Slovenská ľudová majolika Modra offers workshops for visitors. This gives you two different ways to explore the subject: its historical development and a hands-on introduction to ceramics. If you are particularly interested in this craft, you can make both aspects distinct highlights of your trip.

The Museum of Slovak Ceramic Sculpture presents the history of ceramics in Modra, as well as traditions associated with life in the guild system. The focus is therefore not only on individual works, but also on local ceramic history and its related traditions. The Ignác Bizmayer Gallery offers a different perspective: housed in a historic defensive bastion, it displays, among other things, figurative ceramic works by Ignác Bizmayer, Jozef Franko and Marián Liška. The selection of artists and works makes the Gallery a specific destination for visitors interested in figurative ceramics.

Ľudovít Štúr and the town’s history

The Ľudovít Štúr Museum features four permanent exhibitions. They explore Ľudovít Štúr himself, as well as the history and cultural and ethnographic traditions of Modra and the surrounding region. The museum is housed in the Emresz House, where Štúr died in 1856. A visit therefore links the story of a well-known figure with a broader perspective on the town and its region. If you are more interested in biography and regional culture than in ceramics, this offers a distinct focus.

Horná brána is also part of the town’s history: of Modra’s three town gates, it is the only one still standing. It is occasionally open during exhibitions and events. If you plan to visit, check the relevant dates in advance; access is tied to events and is not available at all times.

Archaeological traces and outdoor destinations

Zámčisko is an archaeological site with the remains of a Slavic hillfort dating from the late 9th century. Below it is a freely accessible, 200-metre-long mine tunnel. These two features offer different points of historical interest: traces of an early fortified settlement above, and a tunnel below. Tisové skaly is a natural monument with the fifth level of protection. These places add archaeological and landscape themes to the museums and historic buildings.

An observation tower was built in 2018 on the site of an older tower and offers excellent views of the surrounding area. Cyclists can also enjoy a 4.96-kilometre cycle path, mostly paved, with rest areas and bicycle repair stations. Its length, surface and facilities provide concrete information to help you choose between an excursion to the viewpoint and a bike ride; they do not determine which theme will interest you most.

Wine as a distinct highlight

Pivnica u Pradeda is a historic wine cellar in the centre of Modra with a tradition spanning more than 500 years. Guided wine tastings are offered there. This gives wine its own place in your itinerary: alongside ceramics, exhibitions and the town’s history, you can also take part in a guided tasting. So, if you choose Modra as a destination for your trip, you can tailor your focus to your interests—crafts, regional history, archaeological and scenic discoveries, or wine.
