Ivanice combines a local history documented in writing since 1245 with a landscape precisely located by the Blh. The Reformed church, the municipality’s oldest monument, stands in the village; Ivanice is also situated in the southern part of the Rimavská kotlina Basin. The village centre is 168 metres above sea level. This offers two perspectives when choosing a holiday apartment: a cultural landmark in the village and its geographical setting in the river valley. You can therefore consider whether local history or the landscape should take priority on your trip.
Local History Across Several Periods
Ivanice was first mentioned in writing in 1245. Five historical names are recorded for the village: Iwan (1245), Ivanfalua (1427), Iwanyi (1786), Ivanovce (1920) and Ivanice (1927). The sequence spans the 13th to the 20th century. The forms from 1920 and 1927 are particularly close together in time, while the earlier entries are much further apart. During Ottoman rule, Ivanice was partly depopulated. The history of its name and its population development thus offer two distinct ways to explore the past: one can be traced through dated place names, while the other includes a turning point in the village’s population.
The Reformed Church and Its Building History
The Reformed church was built in 1797 and is the municipality’s oldest monument. It is Neoclassical and was altered and adapted in the 20th century. Neoclassical architecture takes inspiration from ancient models; the style designation and later alterations describe different aspects of the building. This makes it possible to place the church more precisely in time and architectural context: 1797 marks its construction, while the 20th century marks a later period of change. For travellers interested in architectural history, the church combines a clear date with a style and subsequent adaptations.
Location by the Blh and Landscape
Geographically, Ivanice lies in the southern part of the Rimavská kotlina Basin, on the floodplain and a terrace of the Blh. The municipality’s territory is unforested and includes terraces of the hilly terrain as well as the river floodplain. The village centre is 168 metres above sea level; this figure refers to the centre, not the entire municipal area. These are different scales for orientation: the basin locates the village regionally, the floodplain and terrace describe its relationship to the Blh, and the elevation applies to the village centre.
The municipal area consists of Tertiary marls, claystones and sandstones, covered by river deposits and loess loams. Brown, alluvial and gley soils occur in Ivanice. The geological composition adds information about the bedrock and soil types to the topographical description.
