Hodejov brings two interests together for a stay: marked hiking trails with specific destinations and a history that ranges from a Gothic castle ruin to a Late Classicist manor house. There is also the landscape of the Cerová vrchovina in the western part of the village, through which the Gortva stream also flows. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether you would rather focus your time on trail destinations, cultural heritage, or a combination of the two.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
A green-marked hiking trail starts in Hodejov and leads to Steblová skala, Mount Ragáč and Hajnáčka. Regional Route 2 runs from Blhovce through Hodejov to Jesenské. The route descriptions use different reference points: the green-marked trail names destinations, while Route 2 gives a sequence of villages. This can help you choose between a trail to specific hiking destinations and a plan following a regional route. Check the conditions on your chosen route before setting out.
You can drink mineral spring water in Hodejov. Check local water conditions and access before stopping there. In the western part of Hodejov, the hilly landscape of the Cerová vrchovina extends through the village; the Gortva stream also flows through it. For nature lovers, these landscape features add another perspective on Hodejov to the named hiking destinations.
Castle Hill and Cultural History
Hodejovský hrad is a Gothic castle ruin of archaeological significance. Today, only small remnants of its foundation walls remain. It withstood attacks by the Hussites and Ottomans, but was captured and ravaged in 1574 after several attempts. The small Chapel of St. Anne also stands on the castle hill. The castle’s eventful history thus contrasts with the few remains that have survived; the chapel is another architectural landmark on the hill.
The Hodejov bronze hoard is among the most beautiful and scientifically valuable finds in Slovakia. In addition, a total of 361 artefacts were collected in Hodejov in 1961 and 1962, each with its own historical significance.
The architecture offers further tangible points of interest: Hodejov has a Late Classicist manor house dating from 1865, designed by the Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl. There is also a Classicist church in the village. The manor house and church thus sit alongside the archaeological finds and castle ruin as further themes for a culturally oriented stay.
Sándor Petőfi stayed in Hodejov in 1846 and 1847. The history of the 19th century also includes the iron baths and a steam mill that were operating in Hodejov at the time. These economic and cultural traces add further dimensions to the village’s history alongside its architectural heritage.
Plan Your Travel Dates and Stay
The hunting celebrations in honour of St. Hubert are traditionally held in Hodejov every year. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, coordinate your plans with the date of the celebration that year.
When looking for a holiday apartment, your reason for travelling can be your first filter: would you like to focus on hiking destinations, archaeological and architectural heritage, or the St. Hubert celebrations? If the festival is the deciding factor, include its specific date in your plans.
