A blue-marked hiking trail runs through the settlement of Gemerské Dechtáre. At the same time, open, hilly to mountainous terrain and specific natural and historical features shape the area. If you are weighing up a stay that combines hiking, scenery and local history, the municipality offers more than one way to explore it: the trail route and terrain details help you find your way, while the nature reserve and historic buildings appeal to other interests.

Location and landscape

Gemerské Dechtáre lies in the northeastern part of the Cerová vrchovina and in the valley of a tributary of the Mačací potok. The municipality's terrain is hilly to mountainous and mostly unforested. The municipal area ranges in elevation from 192 to 486 metres above sea level; geologically, it consists of Middle Tertiary sandstones. This makes it possible to understand the area both in terms of its location in the valley and its varied, open terrain. If you are taking nature and outdoor activities into account when planning your trip, these two landscape features offer different points of reference.

The blue-marked hiking trail

The blue-marked hiking trail runs through the settlement. It starts at Jesenské railway station and goes via Širkovce, Širkovský hrad and the Fušom hill to Gemerské Dechtáre. After crossing the Dechtársky potok in the protected area, the trail continues through Senná and Ragáč. This sequence links named places with a hill and a stream crossing, making the route easy to follow through its specific landmarks. Check current trail conditions locally before setting out.

Basalt and protected species

The Steblová skala Nature Reserve covers 35.42 hectares and has been protected since 2000. The formation is an exposed basalt infill of a volcanic crater. Its geological features include basalt dykes, basalt flows and the preserved columnar jointing of the basalt. Rare and protected heat-loving plant and animal species occur in the forest-steppe areas. If you are interested in geology and nature as well as hiking trails, the area offers two distinct points of interest: rock formations and biodiversity. Please observe the area's protection rules.

Chapel, church and local history

The Neoclassical chapel, dating from 1880, is the oldest monument in Gemerské Dechtáre. The Roman Catholic church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Sorrows and is considered a pilgrimage site. If you are planning a visit, check access and pilgrimage dates in advance.

The written history of the area dates back to 1244. Historical names recorded over the years include colonia Dettarum, Deltar, Dehcher, Dether, Detér and Detiar. The year 1828 offers a snapshot of the 19th century: Gemerské Dechtáre then had 75 houses and 573 inhabitants, who worked in agriculture. Taken together, these details provide insight into different aspects of local history: early written references, religious buildings and the agricultural population of the 19th century.
