The castle above the village and the educational trail that starts in the village give Muráň two distinct focal points: history and hiking. Cigánka adds nature and a protected area to the picture. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether the castle, a walking route or the landscape of the reserve will be your main focus.

Muráň Castle: History and Dimensions

Muráň Castle is located above the village and was first mentioned in writing in 1271 as “castrum Mvran.” It is considered the third-highest castle in Slovakia. Its ruins are almost 360 metres long and 96 metres high. The date places the castle in the written historical record; the measurements give an idea of the scale of the ruins.

The Muránsky hrad Educational Trail

The Muránsky hrad Educational Trail starts in Muráň; its first station is next to the municipal office. The route is 6.5 kilometres long and has a total elevation gain of 530 metres. It is for pedestrians only. Take both figures into account when planning: distance and elevation gain describe different aspects of the route. Check the route details before setting off. The pedestrian-only restriction is just as important as the route measurements when weighing the route against your other travel interests.

Cigánka and the Nature Reserve

The Cigánka rock rises above Muráň to 938 metres above sea level. Cigánka, including the castle grounds, was declared a national nature reserve in 1984. More than 330 species of lichen grow on the castle walls, on rocks and on tree bark in the reserve. Cigánka can therefore be understood both through the height of the rock and the diversity of its lichens: its natural character is evident on rocks, walls and trees.

Veľká lúka on the Muránska planina

Veľká lúka on the karst plateau of the Muránska planina also adds to the natural setting. It is the largest meadow on this plateau. A stud farm built in 1950 stands at its northern end. Horses are kept at Veľká lúka year-round in natural conditions and graze freely in the meadows of the Muránska planina. In contrast to the rocky Cigánka, Veľká lúka is centred on the open meadow of the karst plateau. The stud farm and horse keeping thus add a distinct landscape feature to the natural attractions.

Culture and Travel Planning

The Múzeum Muráň offers another cultural attraction. Visitors must register two days in advance at the municipal office in Muráň. Allow for this lead time and check the arrangements before your visit.

When looking for accommodation in Muráň, it helps to have a clear travel priority. The castle and museum offer cultural history, while planning for the educational trail depends on its length, elevation gain and pedestrian-only restriction. Cigánka and Veľká lúka offer different perspectives on nature: a rocky reserve on the one hand, and a karst plateau and horse keeping on the other. This distinction can help you tailor your day’s plans to your interests.
