Zemiansky Vrbovok brings together archaeological history and architectural heritage. This combination can help you decide where to travel: the treasure find takes you far back into the past, while the church, manor house and homes showcase different forms of preserved architecture. The landscape also has specific geographical landmarks. Those who put culture and the character of the village first will find several perspectives to explore, separately or together.

The treasure find and its historical context

The Zemiansky Vrbovok treasure is archaeological evidence of settlement in the municipal area in the 7th century. It was discovered on 7 May 1937, when farmer Ján Štimel came across it while levelling a slope. The two dates serve different purposes. The 7th century places the settlement in context; 1937 marks the date and circumstances of the discovery. This distinction helps keep the early settlement and the later discovery of the find from being read as one and the same event.

The find comprises several dozen silver ornaments, coins, vessels and various damaged objects. The landscape connection is also specific: from the place where the treasure was hidden, there is a view of Sitno. Exploring the find thus leads from its historical context to a particular view of the surrounding area.

Protestant church: architecture, art and remembrance

The Protestant church stands on a hillside south of the village. It is a single-nave Neoclassical building with a semicircular chancel and a projecting tower dating from 1923. “Single-nave” describes the layout; the chancel is the area at the altar end. These terms help explain the building’s layout without confusing the church’s location with its architecture.

The interior has a flat ceiling; the altarpiece “Jesus Christ” was also created by Ľ. Schramek in 1923. This means two elements of the church are associated with the same year: the projecting tower as part of the architecture, and the altarpiece as an independent work. The church building also bears a memorial plaque to Ondrej Plachý. He was born in Zemiansky Vrbovok and is considered one of the leading representatives of the first phase of the Enlightenment. The memorial connection adds a biographical dimension to the architecture and art.

Preserved buildings and other memorials

Older architectural forms are part of the village’s history beyond the church, too: Zemiansky Vrbovok has a preserved original manor house, as well as several homes with their original architecture. Another element of cultural memory is the monument “V pavučinách času” (“In the Webs of Time”). It was unveiled by representatives of Zemiansky Vrbovok, Bzovík and the Slovak National Museum. The preserved buildings and the story of the unveiling offer different ways to explore the area: the enduring village character on the one hand, and a named monument and those involved in its unveiling on the other.

The landscape in context

Zemiansky Vrbovok lies on the Krupina Plateau; the municipal area is hilly, and the Vrbovok stream flows through the village. The plateau describes the wider geographical setting, while the terrain and stream add to the local character. There is also a view of Sitno from the place where the treasure was hidden. So a broad geographical setting, a watercourse running through the municipality and a particular landscape view can all be found here. This gives your travel plans a distinct landscape focus alongside the architectural and cultural history.
