Medovarce brings together the landscape of the Krupinská planina, a distinctive church landmark and several traces of history. To understand the place, it is worth considering its landscape, architectural history and former local activities separately.
Landscape and Orientation
Medovarce lies in the southern part of the Krupinská planina, in a valley enclosed on all sides. The Krupinica flows through the municipality. This brings two scales of the landscape into focus: its place within the larger upland area and the river as a tangible natural feature within the municipality. The Evangelical church is a distinctive landmark of Medovarce and provides a clear focal point in the townscape.
Evangelical Church and Lime Tree
The Evangelical church in Medovarce was built in 1832. Its furnishings include a Neoclassical organ dating from 1820, made by an unknown master, and a Late Gothic–Renaissance baptismal font carved from stone, dating from around 1500. The dates span a considerable period: the font is much older than the church building, while the organ and church were made just twelve years apart. Thus, several eras come together in the church’s history.
A more than 500-year-old lime tree stands near the church. It adds a second distinctive landmark to the church and brings natural and cultural heritage into close proximity. Those interested in local history can read different kinds of continuity in these two features: the tree’s long lifespan and the church’s construction and furnishing history.
Watermill and Historic Routes
The Pavol Hajnal watermill in Medovarce dates from the 19th century. Part of its original technical equipment has survived to this day. This brings the history of technical installations into view alongside the church heritage. Another historical trace is the Zlatá cesta: it ran along a sunken lane at the edge of Medovarce. A historic inn stood beside the route. Together, the mill, sunken lane and inn point to different aspects of local history, without prescribing a present-day visitor itinerary.
An older regional guidebook mentions a warm spring on the main road towards Rykynčice, with a constant temperature of about 20°C. If you would like to include the spring in your plans, check local conditions and access before visiting.
Viticulture and Beekeeping
The history of agriculture is also part of Medovarce’s character. Viticulture played an important role in the past; several varieties of own-rooted vines, known as Samorodáky, were cultivated. The vines’ name is part of this story, as is the former importance of viticulture itself.
The history of beekeeping provides a broader regional context: it was widespread in Hont County in the 17th and 18th centuries. Bees were also kept in Medovarce, and honey was used to make Medovina or Medovica. Together, these offer two historical perspectives on local activities: viticulture and its named grape varieties, and beekeeping and the honey-based drinks it produced.
