When planning a trip to Bzovík, two distinct themes come together: the history of the monastery fortress and activities on cycling and hiking routes. Other highlights include the Church of St Stephen the King (Kostol sv. Štefana kráľa), with its Baroque interior, and a Lourdes grotto. When looking for a holiday apartment in Bzovík, you can plan your stay around whether you mainly want to see historic buildings or spend time on a route.

From Benedictine Monastery to Fortress

Bzovík Fortress is one of Slovakia’s oldest architectural monuments. The complex was originally built around 1131 as a Benedictine monastery; between 1530 and 1546, it was converted into a fortress. During this conversion, it was given a high perimeter wall, four corner bastions and a moat. For a visit focused on architectural history, the transformation from monastery to fortified complex offers a clear thread to follow: its original function and later fortifications belong to different periods in the history of the place.

Visitor regulations that came into effect on 1 August 2020 provided for visits without a guide or with a guide. Guided tours were scheduled for Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm and 5 pm, and on weekdays by prior arrangement, and lasted about 30 minutes. As these regulations describe the situation in 2020, check the current visiting arrangements before your trip.

Church, Altars and Local Landmarks

The Church of St Stephen the King (Kostol sv. Štefana kráľa) was built in 1606 as an extension to an earlier chapel. The church is attributed to the Late Gothic and Early Renaissance periods and has a Baroque interior. The altars also have their own dates: the high altar dates from 1762, and the side altars from 1744. The building’s history and furnishings can therefore be viewed as distinct layers from different periods, rather than reducing the church to a single construction date.

The Lourdes Grotto, Jaskynka Lurdskej Panny Márie, is located next to the church. In front of the Catholic church in Bzovík there is also a lime tree around 300 years old. These landmarks add further specific points of interest to the fortress and contribute to the town’s cultural and historical character.

Cycling on the Hontianska cyklomagistrála

The Hontianska cyklomagistrála 011 connects Krupina and Detva and runs through the Hont region. Near Bzovík, the described route begins at the ruins of the former Benedictine monastery above the town, descends to the town centre and then turns towards Krupina. This section thus brings together the history of the monastery and a regional cycling connection.

The route is 50.8 kilometres long, paved and classified as a road cycling route of medium difficulty. This distance refers to the entire route, not just the section through Bzovík. Surfaces and markings may change, so check the current route conditions before setting off. The route description also gives you a clear idea of its course near Bzovík: from the ruins downhill into town and onwards towards Krupina.

Hiking the Nature Trail

The Krupina–Uňatín–Čabrad nature trail offers a different focus. It is a linear, self-guided hiking trail that can be used in either direction and combines natural history with cultural history. Unlike the road cycling route, the focus here is on walking a themed trail. The nature trail is described as usable year-round; nevertheless, check current trail conditions before setting out.

One version of the nature trail starts at Bzovík railway station. If you plan to use it as your starting point, check current transport connections. The two routes therefore offer different ways to plan your trip: the cycling route is a paved, moderately difficult road cycling route through the region, while the nature trail is described as a linear walking route with a natural and cultural history theme. You can use this distinction when looking for a holiday apartment and consider whether cycling, hiking or historic buildings will play the biggest part in your stay.
