Predajná can be explored through three distinct aspects: protected landscapes, religious buildings and technical monuments. The natural areas differ in what they protect, while the church, Calvary and water mill offer insights into the history of the village. When planning your stay, it helps to decide first whether nature, culture or a specific event date will shape your visit.
Natural Areas and Landscape
Predajná lies in the valley of the Jasenský Brook; the Low Tatras border the municipality to the north and the Slovak Ore Mountains to the south. The protected areas also span different landscapes: part of Predajná’s northern outskirts lies in the buffer zone of the Low Tatras National Park, while the southern part is in the buffer zone of the Poľana Protected Landscape Area.
Predajnianske vodopády is a 11.70-hectare natural monument. It protects cascades, boulder fields, and preserved plant and animal communities of the submontane zone. A marked trail in the Predajnianske Čelno valley leads to the waterfalls. If you plan to take it, check trail conditions locally.
Predajnianska slatina has a different conservation focus: this 11.35-hectare nature reserve preserves wetland communities with protected and endangered plant and animal species. Jajkovská sutina, in turn, is a natural monument protecting naturally formed scree slopes in the Slovak Ore Mountains. At 50.91 hectares, it is larger in area than the other two sites mentioned. Together, the three protected areas represent waterfalls and boulder fields, wetlands, and scree slopes.
Church, Calvary and Technical Monuments
The present-day church in Predajná was built between 1605 and 1612 in the Late Gothic style. A Calvary with a church and four chapels was established on Hrádok Hill; they were consecrated in 1873. On 15 September, the Calvary is the site of the parish’s largest indulgence feast. Pilgrims from the surrounding parishes come to the celebration.
The village also has a technical history. The Predajná water mill, together with its millrace, stands on Bečov Street and is a national cultural monument. Its technical milling equipment is exceptionally rare in Slovakia in having been preserved in its entirety. Kelemenov tunel lies within the Predajnianske vodopády protected area and is also a technical monument. It is considered the only tunnel in Central Europe located on a forest road. Here, a protected landscape and a technical monument meet within the same protected area.
Sport, Dates and Travel
The Predajná Biathlon Club holds biathlon sporting events at the Šimáň shooting range in Predajná. Event dates vary. Another local tradition is associated with Hrb: it has been regularly climbed since the 1950s, and in the late 1990s this tradition developed into a larger public event. This does not establish a current annual date.
