When looking for accommodation in Lungi, you can start by considering two questions: How important is onward travel to Freetown, and are you especially interested in coastal, flora or island themes? Lungi combines a practical connection to travel with its own landscape and cultural themes.

Travel to and onward from Freetown

Freetown International Airport is located in Lungi. From there, road, ferry and water taxi connections cross Tagrin Bay to Freetown. These options make onward travel a useful part of your planning. Check current connections before your trip and plan your arrival around your itinerary. When choosing accommodation, you can weigh up whether connections to Freetown or a focus on Lungi’s landscape and culture matters more to you.

Coast and flora in Lungi

Lungi’s beach areas include Banda Beach and the stretch of coast beside Briefcase Entertainment. These are two specific coastal features of the area. Cultural Director Foday Jalloh described the islands in Kaffu Bullom, Lungi, as suitable for ecotourism because of their flora. This assessment adds a distinct natural aspect to the coastal theme: plant life is also one of the features that define Lungi.

Island culture and activities in the surrounding area

Boat racing is described as widespread at the island sites of Yanlensun, Mabakeh, Bombali and Kerefey in Kaffu Bullom, Lungi. The Ministry of Tourism wanted to include the activity in its year-round campaign.

Tasso Island lies near the destination. The Tasso Ecotourism Project lists canoeing as an activity for island stays. The project also describes transport to and from the island for guests in a purpose-built seaworthy canoe. If Tasso is part of your plans, confirm current transfer arrangements directly with the operator.

Northern as the wider regional context

The wider destination of Northern includes other nature and cultural themes. In Tonkolili District, Mamunta Mayosso Wildlife Sanctuary protects the endangered pygmy hippopotamus and is one of the few areas in Sierra Leone where this species is protected. Despite its small size, the sanctuary is home to 252 bird species. In the Wara Wara Mountains in Koinadugu District, immediately northwest of Kabala, sharp-edged hills shape the landscape and reach heights of up to 1,000 metres. The Loma Mountains in the same district offer diverse wildlife habitats, including habitats for pygmy hippos and viviparous toads.

Lake Sonfon, in the Diang Chiefdom of Koinadugu District, is also among Northern’s regional themes. It is considered a site of traditional beliefs and local cultural ceremonies. An IBA survey recorded 115 bird species at the lake and in the surrounding vegetation in 1994. These regional nature and cultural features add to the picture of Lungi without replacing its local beach, flora and island themes.
