Vrandol lies between the Padine valley to the east and the Vrtopa valley to the west. It belongs to the northern part of the Bela Palanka wine-growing subregion. The landscape features varied elevations, an uphill road and views to the south. Vrandol is also a named point on the Sultan’s Trail, with its own historical and culinary connections.
Hiking the Sultan’s Trail
The Sultan’s Trail is an international long-distance hiking route from Vienna to Istanbul. The trail guide, most recently updated on March 15, 2025, lists Vrandol on stage ST-421 Sićevo–Bela Palanka at kilometre 20.8. The full stage is 31.2 kilometres long. Stage ST-421a, also named Sićevo–Bela Palanka, is likewise listed as 31.2 kilometres long, with a duration of 11:23 hours. When planning, check the stage code so you can correctly match the relevant details.
ST-421a is described as a challenging hike through hilly terrain, with a route that is mostly downhill. Together, the distance, time and terrain give a clearer picture of the day’s hike than the kilometre count alone. The trail guide was most recently updated on March 15, 2025; check the current route before setting out.
Village and landscape
The lower inhabited part of Vrandol lies on the Igrišta terrace on the right bank of the Nišava, at an elevation of 315 to 317 metres. In the higher part of the village, houses reach up to 360 metres and lie along the transition zone between the Neogene hills and the limestone slopes of rinjska površ. These figures describe different elevations within the village, not one uniform elevation.
The road through Vrandol climbs uphill. As you gain elevation, views open up to the south across Suva planina, Divna gorica, Trem and Sokolov kamen. A local gravel road connects Vrandol with Draževo on the right bank of the Nišava. Both the hillside setting and the village’s position by the river shape how you find your way around.
Local history and traditions
At Gradac, the site of the former settlement of Staro Selo, remains of Roman material culture have been found. The recorded church sites also point to different chapters in the village’s history: in 1916, a church site dedicated to Saint George was excavated in Vrandol. A second church site at Klimenta was dedicated by the local population to the Archangel.
Another religious landmark is the votive cross Obrok Krst at Vrh, which is associated with Đurđevdan. Đurđevdan is also Vrandol’s village Zavetina. Together, these places and traditions offer different glimpses into the village’s history, from Roman material remains to local religious customs.
Local cuisine and accommodation
Belopalanačka vrtka is a variety of pepper that, according to a description published in 2026, grows only in the Bela Palanka area, particularly in the village of Vrandol, thanks to its distinctive microclimate and soils. It is used in traditional dishes such as sukana banica, ajvar and stuffed peppers, which come in meatless or meat-filled versions. Pretopenica with leek and beans is also a speciality.
Country house Vuksanović offers barbecue facilities and a sun terrace; check before your visit whether both are currently available.
