A beach, a village on cliffside slopes and artistic activities at Sobo-Badè give Toubab Dialao several distinct points of interest. There is also a local legend that adds its own story. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether the coast, village landscape, courses or local tradition should shape your stay. You can explore these themes separately or combine them.
Beach, cliffs and courses
Toubab Dialao has a beach, and the village lies on cliffside slopes. These two features offer different perspectives on the place: the beach represents its coastal character, while the cliffs define the village landscape. When looking for accommodation, you can first consider which of these aspects is especially important for your trip.
Dance and sculpture courses are offered at Sobo-Badè. The courses have different focuses: dance and visual art each offer their own way to engage with artistic practice. If you want to include a course in your plans, check the dates in advance. This will help you decide whether a course fits your trip schedule, rather than assuming it is a fixed part of a day’s itinerary.
Local tradition and a historical reference
A local tradition tells how El Hadj Oumar Tall, leader of the Toucouleurs, came to the beach at Toubab Dialao to bring forth a freshwater spring with mysterious properties. This story is part of local legend. A different, dated reference is the laying of the École des Sables’ foundation stone, which took place in Toubab Dialao in 1996. Thus, a traditional story and a specific historical milestone sit alongside one another, while remaining different kinds of accounts.
Elsewhere in the wider travel region, the École des Sables also worked with primary schools as part of an initiative described in 2021. Dance lessons were intended to educate children and foster their cultural sensitivity. This regional approach differs from the dance and sculpture courses at Sobo-Badè: it describes collaboration with schools and an educational goal, not a single course offering.
Dakar as a separate cultural and nature highlight
Dakar offers further, distinct cultural and nature-related themes within the wider travel region. The Monument de la Renaissance Africaine stands on the Les Mamelles hill in Dakar, is 52 metres tall and is considered Africa’s tallest statue. The Les Mamelles hill is also home to the lighthouse, built in 1864 and considered Dakar’s oldest. From its location, panoramic views extend across the Cap-Vert Peninsula.
The Musée Théodore Monod d’art africain de l’IFAN is located in central Dakar and opens onto Place Soweto. It serves to preserve cultural heritage and as a place for sharing artistic forms of expression. Dakar also hosts the Biennale of Contemporary African Art. Together, a museum, a permanent monument and a cultural event offer different ways to engage with the city’s art and culture.
The Île de Gorée, with an area of 28 hectares, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a symbol of the slave trade and a pilgrimage destination for the African diaspora. A regular boat service from Dakar harbour to Gorée takes fifteen minutes. Check the timetable before setting out if you plan to visit.
Dakar’s coastal and natural areas also offer a variety of highlights. The coastline is lined with protected beaches and long stretches of sand overlooking the ocean waves. The Parc National des îles de la Madeleine is a destination for birdwatchers and has a protected ecosystem. The archipelago off Dakar is also home to a natural rock-pool bathing spot among cliffs and small fish; local access conditions may vary.
Lac Retba, also known as Lac Rose, is a lagoon surrounded by dunes and filao trees. Its pink appearance is attributed to microscopic algae that oxidise the iron in the saltwater when exposed to sunlight. Dune tours by off-road vehicle, motorcycle and quad bike are offered in the area; check the conditions locally. Tasting seafood is also part of Dakar’s visitor offerings.
