The ĂŽle de Saint-Louis lies between the two channels of the Senegal River estuary. Its urban layout is divided into the northern quarter, the southern quarter and Place Faidherbe, with the Palais de la Gouvernance at its centre. Faidherbe Bridge is the only crossing to the historic island. The island brings together its riverside setting, urban layout and colonial-era buildings; a broader view of Saint-Louis also takes in landscapes south of the city and recurring events.

Urban Layout and Architecture

The street plan of the ĂŽle de Saint-Louis is regular and orthogonal. The HĂ´tel du Gouvernement, built on the site of the city's former fort, forms its centre. In the old town, balcony houses, the gallery houses of the Signares and rare, low Portuguese houses shape the streetscape. The architecture thus combines a clear focal point in the urban plan with a variety of historic house types. The ĂŽle de Saint-Louis was the former capital of West Africa and illustrates the development of colonial administration in the region. Saint-Louis has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

Faidherbe Bridge

The spans of Faidherbe Bridge were brought from France in separate sections in 1897. In the wider Saint-Louis destination, the bridge has seven arch spans; the second span from the island is designed to rotate around a fixed axis to allow ships to pass. If you plan to cross the bridge, it is advisable to check the latest conditions.

Culture and Event Dates

Another cultural attraction is the exhibition at the Musée Jean Mermoz de l’Aéropostal. It features images, paintings, aircraft models such as the Breguet 14, large silhouettes, posters and archival documents. If you would like to include the museum in your plans, check current visiting arrangements in advance. The Saint-Louis Jazz Festival began in 1993 in the historic city of Saint-Louis and brings together musicians from around the world every year. Fanal is part of the annual cultural calendar of the Saint-Louis region. The Maggal des deux rakaas commemorates the prayer offered by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacké at the Governor's Palace in 1895; every year on 5 September, it brings thousands of Mouride faithful to Saint-Louis. Check the specific event dates if you would like to plan your trip around an occasion.

Landscapes in the Wider Saint-Louis Destination

The wider Saint-Louis destination offers additional landscapes and travel experiences. South of Saint-Louis lies the Langue de Barbarie, with dunes, islets and fishing villages, where the river meets the ocean. The Bou el Mogdad cruise travels from Saint-Louis to Podor. Historic former trading posts can be seen at stops along the way. As details of the itinerary may change, check the latest schedule and route before making specific plans. Alongside the island's urban history, visitors can choose from distinct regional experiences, including the river and coastal landscapes to the south and a river journey.
