The Daaka of Médina Gounass is an annual religious event and a ten-day spiritual retreat. Thousands of worshippers come from all regions of Senegal and neighboring countries. The ten days refer to the duration, not a fixed date: the dates vary from year to year. So check the details for your intended travel period.

The Daaka: History and Getting Your Bearings

The Daaka was established in 1942 by the marabout Thierno Mouhamadou Saïdou Ba (1900–1980). The event site is ten kilometers from the town of Médina Gounass. The town is in the Vélingara Department of the Kolda Region, about 160 kilometers from the city of Kolda and 80 kilometers from Tambacounda. For clarity, it is useful to distinguish the reference points: the ten kilometers refer to the distance from the site to the town of Médina Gounass; the distances to Kolda and Tambacounda refer to the city. During the spiritual retreat, men traditionally prepare meals for thousands of pilgrims.

Historic Sites and Cultural Heritage

The region’s historical heritage includes a range of sites. In Ndorna, in the Médina Yoro Fulah Arrondissement, the Tata of Moussa Molo Baldé is one of the historic monuments of the Kolda Region. In Soulabaly, also in the Médina Yoro Fulah Arrondissement, the Tomb of Coumba Oudé is among the historic monuments. Hamdallahi is a historic site in the same arrondissement.

The megalithic site Site mégalithique de Pata is among the historic or protohistoric sites in Kolda Department. The Arbre Moussa Molo Baldé, also called the Caïlcédrat de Kolda, is considered an important historical and cultural symbol of the region. The Kankurang is also practiced in Kolda as part of its tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Named historic places thus stand alongside a cultural practice that is part of the region’s heritage.

Rivers, Forests and Savanna

The region’s waterway network includes the Casamance River and its tributaries. Natural vegetation ranges from forest to shrub savanna and includes palm groves and mangroves, among other types. For nature enthusiasts, this range is a defining contrast: forest and shrub savanna vegetation alongside rivers, palm groves and mangroves. Kolda’s forestry resources include around 50,000 hectares of Niokolo-Koba National Park. Kolda is also part of the tourist region of Casamance, which extends from Ziguinchor through Kolda and Sédhiou to Cap Skirring.

Market and Accommodation Planning

The Kolda Region is home to the international weekly market in Diaobé. If you plan to visit, check market dates and local conditions. A regional figure published on May 27, 2025, reported 23 tourist accommodation or reception facilities with a total of 337 places. As numbers and capacity may change, check current availability for your travel dates.
