Saint-Barthélemy offers several ways to plan a trip that combines nature and cultural heritage. The marine reserve covers several waters and bays; there is also the Grand Cul-de-Sac lagoon and a historic house in Gustavia. Island panoramas, wildlife watching, beach activities and history offer different ways to experience the island.

Marine Reserve and Lagoon

The Saint-Barthélemy marine reserve covers the waters around Île de Fourchue and the bays of Colombier and Petite Anse. It also includes the bays of Marigot, Grand Cul-de-Sac and Petit Cul-de-Sac, extending to Îlets Grenadins. The reserve also covers the waters around Îlets Gros Ilet, Pain de Sucre, Frégate and Toc Vers.

The protected area therefore includes a variety of geographical features: waters around an island and islets, as well as several bays. It is not limited to a single bay, but includes several named parts of the island and seascape.

Marine wildlife, particularly turtles and fish, can be observed in the Grand Cul-de-Sac lagoon. Whether animals are visible depends on natural conditions. Another way to explore the lagoon is by transparent kayak; availability may vary. If you plan this activity, check in advance. The two options offer different perspectives: wildlife watching focuses on marine animals, while kayaking lets you explore the lagoon.

Panoramas and Beach Activities

Colombier Beach offers panoramic views across the island. You can swim at Lorient Beach; surfing is possible there depending on conditions. The difference is clear when choosing an experience: Colombier is known for its island views, while Lorient offers swimming and surfing when conditions permit. If you plan to surf, take the conditions into account.

History and Cultural Heritage in Gustavia

Dinzey House, also known as Le Brigantin, is located in Gustavia. The house was built around 1820, survived the great fire of 1852, and has been listed as a historic monument since April 17, 1990.

The dates emphasize different things: the construction date is approximate, while the listing as a historic monument has an exact date. In between is the year of the fire the house survived. This places the building's origins, a historic event and its later monument status as distinct milestones.

The Brigantin Museum offers insights into Gustavia’s local cultural heritage.

Public and Further Orientation

Public is a waterfront district on the edge of Gustavia, whose character is shaped by port activity. Unlike a single monument, the focus here is on an entire district and its character shaped by the port.

Saint-Barthélemy Airport is located in Saint-Jean Bay. This is a specific location to bear in mind when planning your arrival; Dinzey House, by contrast, is in Gustavia.
