Zimnicea’s riverside promenade is used as a walking path. West of the present-day city, an archaeological site lies on the high Danube terrace; to the east, the protected Vedea-Dunăre area stretches across the lower Danube floodplain. Together with its historical traces and seasonal leisure trips aboard the “Valul Dunărean” passenger ship, Zimnicea offers several distinct themes for a stay. First, consider whether you want to focus on a boat trip, the landscape or the history of the place.

Boat trips with seasonal conditions

Paid leisure trips aboard the “Valul Dunărean” passenger ship are available from April to October on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, by request or reservation. Passengers board and disembark for this activity exclusively at the purpose-built pontoon in the port of Zimnicea. The trip is therefore a standalone activity with a clear time frame and a request or reservation requirement. If you plan to take it, check the seasonal information on the municipal website before travelling, as operating details may change.

Terrace and floodplain: two landscapes

The archaeological site “Situl arheologic de la Zimnicea - Cetate” lies on a spur of the high Danube terrace, west of the present-day city and east of the Pasărea River. The protected “Vedea-Dunăre” area is a different landscape: it lies in the lower Danube floodplain at the confluence of the Vedea and Danube rivers and extends east of Zimnicea. The contrast between the high terrace and the floodplain at the confluence gives your bearings a specific geographical context. When planning your trip, you can decide which of these distinct landscapes interests you more.

Archaeological traces from several periods

The “Situl Cetate de la Zimnicea” site comprises three settlement layers from the Getic La Tène period and a medieval settlement. The three La Tène layers and the medieval settlement represent different historical phases within the site. This means the cultural and historical perspective is not limited to a single period: the combination of several Getic settlement layers and a medieval find makes the site’s chronological complexity a central theme.

Railway station, cathedral and library

The town’s architectural and commemorative history also offers specific points of interest. The Heroes’ Cemetery was established in 1933–1934 in the courtyard of the “Sfinții Împărați Constantin și Elena” Cathedral. The “Gara Zimnicea” railway station building was constructed in 1901 from Ciurea bricks as a single-storey building. It consists of a projecting central section and two side wings. The railway branch line from Roșiori via Alexandria and Smârdioasa began operating as far as Zimnicea on 1 July 1901. The information about the building and the line thus sheds light on two distinct aspects of railway history: the station’s architecture and the line’s chronology.

The town is also home to the “Biblioteca Orăşenească „Miron Radu Paraschivescu“, Zimnicea” library. It has lending sections for adults and children, as well as a reading room. This adds another cultural institution, with clearly defined reading and lending areas, to the town’s historical sites.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for a hotel in Zimnicea, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay. The leisure trip requires coordination with the season, days of the week and a request or reservation; archaeological and historical themes offer a different focus.
