The Orthodox Church of Sf. Nicolae in Pojorâta has seven towers. With monasteries, hikes on several named mountains and a mountain biking route, religious history and outdoor activities are different options to focus on. Which side interests you more may shape the focus of your stay.
Churches, Monasteries and Local History
The Church of Sf. Nicolae was built in 1901. Its seven towers give the building a distinctive feature, while the year of construction provides a specific historical reference. For travellers interested in sacred architecture, it is a clearly identified destination in the village.
Monasteries are also part of Pojorâta’s religious heritage. The Sfântul Ioan Iacob Corlățeni Monastery is located in Pojorâta; a religious service is held there every day. Pojorâta Monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and Saint Ioan Iacob and was re-established as a monastery on 15 June 1990. These dates distinguish different historical facts: 1901 is the year the Church of Sf. Nicolae was built, while 15 June 1990 marks the re-establishment of Pojorâta Monastery.
The North Moldavian Route, which connected Suceava with Bistrița in Transylvania, is also part of the local history. Pojorâta is associated with guard posts along this route. Cheile Pojorîtei was considered a suitable location from which to watch over the route. This provides another way to connect local history to a specific historic transport link.
Hiking, Mountain Biking and Winter Sports
Hikes are possible on Mount Muncel and on the Adam and Eva mountains. These named destinations offer several specific options for planning tours around the village. Mountain bikers have another activity to choose from: Route 6 begins in the commune of Pojorâta on a forestry road and has an elevation gain of 820 metres. As route conditions may vary, check them before setting off.
The private ski area at Pasul Mestecăniș is also located in the commune of Pojorâta. Snow conditions vary by season. Choosing between winter sports and mountain biking therefore involves different planning considerations: seasonal snow conditions are relevant at the ski area, while the forestry road and elevation gain are specific features of Route 6.
Mountain Scenery and Regional Orientation
The Pietrele Doamnei rock formations in the Rarău Massif lie near Pojorâta. They are at an elevation of 1,634 metres and were declared a natural monument in 1955. This scenic feature complements the activities on the Muncel, Adam and Eva mountains with a named natural monument that has its own elevation and historical protected status.
The road distance is also specified for a drive towards Rarău: the road from the centre of Pojorâta to the foot of the mountain is 15 kilometres long. Check road conditions before setting out. This lets you include the distance in your plans without assuming a specific travel time.
Via Transilvanica offers a regional perspective on the pass: the route passes through Bucovina and over the Obcinele Bucovinei to Pasul Mestecăniș in the commune of Pojorâta. This allows you to take local history, mountain activities and a longer route into account as different aspects of your trip. What shapes your stay depends on whether you want to focus on churches and monasteries, hiking, cycling or seasonal winter sports.
