The Bistrița flows through Dorna-Arini from west to east, shaping both the geography and history of the commune. It also carved out Cheile Zugrenilor; a cycling route runs along the ridge of the Bistrița Mountains, offering views of striking mountain ranges. Along with a monastery, trenches and an ethnographic collection, Dorna Arini offers a range of ways to explore the area during a stay. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether the focus should be on scenery, cycling or local history.

The Bistrița as a landscape and historical axis

The Bistrița flows from west to east through the commune of Dorna-Arini. In 1775, the river became a border: the northern part of the commune lay in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, while the southern part, 75 percent of the commune’s area, belonged to Moldavia. This division lasted 143 years, until after the First World War. Thus, in Dorna-Arini, the Bistrița is not merely a landscape feature; for a long time, the river also marked a political divide.

Cheile Zugrenilor: Gorge and rock formations

Cheile Zugrenilor is four kilometres long. The Bistrița cut the gorge through crystalline schists and crystalline limestone; its very steep slopes reach 200 to 300 metres. Distinctive rock formations include Colțul Acrii, Piatra lui Osman, Grindul Pușcatei and Stânca Coifului. The paved DN 17B road passes through the gorge. The Pietrosul Broștenilor–Cheile Zugrenilor Nature Reserve is a protected area of national interest, associated with Dorna-Arini in Suceava County and located on the administrative boundary between the communes of Dorna-Arini and Crucea.

Cycling route along the ridge of the Bistrița Mountains

The “Dorna-Arini – culmea Munţilor Bistriţei – Panaci” cycling route follows the ridge of the Bistrița Mountains through clearings and pastureland. Along the way, it offers views of the Giumalău Massif to the northwest and the Călimani Mountains to the southwest. For trip planning, this means you can experience different landscapes: travel through the gorge on the paved DN 17B or follow the cycling route along the mountain ridge.

Monastery, trenches and ethnographic collection

The Acoperământul Maicii Domnului Monastery is in Gheorghițeni, in the commune of Dorna-Arini, Suceava County. Its 60-metre-high bell tower is made of wood. On Dealul Vultur, south of the Bistrița, and on Dealul Bărnărel, north of the river, hundreds of metres of trenches dug by soldiers by hand bear witness to wartime.

A description from 2018 identifies the Ethnographic Collection “Pădurea, leagăn de civilizație a răzeșilor Dornei” as a permanent exhibition on the upper floor of the “Savin Alexievici” cultural centre in the village of Cozănești, in the centre of the commune seat. If you plan to visit the collection, check the current opening hours in advance.
