Boghiş has a clear focus on thermal waters; the Reformed Church and Bánffy Castle add historical interest to the area. The spa has several pools for adults and children, while the church’s history can be traced through its origins, conversion and a later new building. If you’re weighing up the location based on its bathing facilities and cultural history, you’ll find two distinct points of interest here.

Thermal Waters and Treatment Options

Boghiș Băi has four outdoor thermal-water pools for adults and children, as well as an indoor pool. The spa is supplied by thermomineral water at 42 °C, with bicarbonate-sodium and iodine-rich properties.

The treatment facilities include hydrotherapy, balneotherapy, physiotherapy, reflexology massage and hydrokinetic therapy, along with medical care and first aid. If you’re choosing the location primarily for its thermal offerings, you can plan around the pools and supplementary treatments.

Church and Castle: Different Timelines

The Biserica Reformată Boghiș dates back to a Catholic church from 1332. In the 16th century, it was converted into a Reformed church. The present building was constructed later, between 1792 and 1796, with the support of Bánffy Dénes and Farkas. These dates mark different periods: 1332 denotes the origin, the 16th century the conversion, and the period from 1792 to 1796 the construction of the present church. Kovács István made the clock in 1800, a few years after the building was constructed.

At Bánffy Castle in Boghiş, an inscription on a roof beam gives 1719 as the year it was built. The last owner was the landowner Ketheli István, who sold the estate in 1925 when he fled. The present castle building houses a retirement home.

The historical themes of the two buildings differ: for the church, the conversion and several construction phases take center stage; for the castle, the year it was built, the change of ownership and its current use are important milestones. This lets you consider each history separately, rather than reducing both buildings to a single date.

Getting There from Zalău

From Zalău, the route to Băile Boghiș goes via Crasna and Nușfalău on DJ191C and DJ191D. It covers 39 km, with a stated journey time of 46 minutes. As the actual journey time depends on road conditions, treat this time as a guide for the route.

If you’re looking for a destination focused on thermal offerings, you can assess Boghiş by its pools and treatment facilities. The church and castle add to the local history in different ways. Your choice of destination therefore depends on whether the spa alone is the deciding factor or whether the historical sites should complement your stay.
