Comuna Șotrile brings together Subcarpathian hills, waterways and a layered local history. To the north, a lower mountain range of the Baiului Mountains comes into view. Churches, historic houses and paths through the landscape give your trip a range of possible focuses. You can decide in advance whether you would rather explore the heights and river valleys or learn about the commune’s architectural history.

Hills, Peaks and River Landscapes

The relief of Comuna Șotrile consists mainly of Subcarpathian hills; to the north, they give way to the lower mountain range of the Baiului Mountains. Cucuiatu reaches 826 metres. At 1,447 metres, Vârful Frumos lies on the commune’s highest mountain range. These two elevations give an impression of the transition between the hills and the mountains.

The waterways also shape the landscape. Cheile Doftanei, also known as Cheile Brebului, lies upstream from Lunca Mare and extends up to Vârful Cucuiatu. Below the Paltinu Dam, the Doftana Valley has a distinctive floodplain, particularly from Lunca Mare downstream to its confluence with the Prahova. The Câmpinița River runs through the western part of the commune and is formed by the Serbuloaia and Boncu streams.

The vegetation includes forests, natural meadows and pastures, cultivated fields and orchards. Together with the varying elevations and river valleys, this diversity reveals different aspects of the landscape without making any single viewpoint or continuous route the main focus.

Churches and Historic Houses

The Sfântul Nicolae Church in Șotrile was built between 1882 and 1884 by Prince Dimitrie Barbu Știrbei together with the residents who worked on his estate. The current paintings were executed by Dimitrie Hornu in 1937, in the Byzantine style using matt oil paint. The former use of the bell tower is also part of local history: it once housed an elementary school.

In Lunca Mare, construction of the Sfântul Pantelimon Church began in 1908 and was completed in 1909. The historic houses in Șotrile date from several periods: Casa Dan Gh. Ion is from the mid-19th century, while Casa Steliana Cheluș dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. Casa Elena Dan is dated to 1900, Casa Ana Stănică to 1907, Casa Ion I. Dăscăleciu to 1910 and Casa Silvia Bârsan to 1920. The churches can thus be considered alongside houses from different decades.

Gathering forest fruits and mushrooms, as well as beekeeping, which was considered an important occupation, were also part of the traditional way of life. For planning your visit, it is also useful to know that there are no museums or memorial houses in Comuna Șotrile; local history is encountered here mainly at the churches and houses mentioned above.

Routes and Practical Information

The Muscel–Voila–Șotrile route reaches the commune after about five kilometres on foot through the Voila forest. Before entering Șotrile, you can take a short walk to Vârful Cucuiatu, whose elevation is given as 826 metres. This route therefore offers two distinct sections: a short detour before entering the commune and a walk through the forest.

A circular route to Vârful Cucuiatul is listed as 18 kilometres, with a walking time of 2.5 hours and a moderate difficulty level. Check current availability before planning. County road DJ207 connects Câmpina with Vistieru via Șotrile; the route is listed as 19 kilometres. Check road conditions before travelling.
