Câmpina offers different perspectives on art, history and landscape. Its museums cover subjects ranging from Nicolae Grigorescu’s works and sketches to the Hașdeu family archive and archaeological finds. Casa cu Grifoni adds the history of technical education to these impressions. When planning a stay, you can decide whether to focus on art and literature, archaeology, or also scenic views and leisure.
Museums: Art, Family History and Archaeology
The Nicolae Grigorescu Memorial Museum presents important works by the artist in their original setting. The interiors and the entire house have been reconstructed. The “Schițe și desene” exhibition offers another perspective on Grigorescu’s work: it comprises 202 sketches covering portraits, humorous drawings, studies of the War of Independence, village life, animals and landscapes. The two focuses are clearly distinct: one features works in a reconstructed home setting, while the other offers a broad selection of drawings and subjects.
The exhibition at the B. P. Hașdeu Memorial Museum comprises around 300 exhibits. These include family photographs, documents, manuscripts, furniture, personal belongings, old books and portraits. The collection also includes Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu’s archive, his designs for Iulia Hașdeu Castle, and first editions of his works and those of Iulia Hașdeu. Personal belongings and documents thus sit alongside literary works and designs—a different approach from the Grigorescu exhibits focused on painting and drawings.
The Slobozia Parish Museum focuses on archaeology. It was opened in 2022 by the “Sf. Nicolae” Orthodox parish and is located in the basement rooms of the former metochion of Sinaia Monastery, which now serves as the parish house. On display are finds from a unique Bronze Age necropolis, with remains of the Tei, Noua and Monteoru cultures. Visitors interested in the region’s early history will therefore find a clear contrast with the art and literature themes of the other museums.
Architecture and Technical History
Casa cu Grifoni was the first electrically lit building in Câmpina. Its history is also connected with training for the oil industry: after the First World War, the building was assigned to the Școala de Maiștri Sondori și Rafinori. This school was founded in Câmpina in 1904 and was considered the first of its kind in the world. The year 1904 refers to the school’s founding; the house was assigned to it only after the First World War. This makes it possible to distinguish two different historical details at one location: the early founding of a specialist school and the later use of Casa cu Grifoni by the school.
Scenic Views and Leisure
The landscape can also be one of the reasons to visit. From 550-metre-high Muscel Hill, you can enjoy a view of Câmpina and the surrounding countryside. Parcul Soceram is on the Muscel Plateau, at the northern exit from the city. It offers opportunities for relaxation, sports and leisure, as well as public dining facilities. The viewpoint and park offer different activities from the museums and historical sites; you can choose what to visit based on your interests.
When choosing a hotel in Câmpina, it helps to first identify your interests: would you mainly like to explore art, literature and archaeology, are you interested in the technical history of Casa cu Grifoni, or would you also like to consider scenic views and leisure activities? These themes can help guide your search for a hotel in Câmpina without requiring you to follow a set itinerary.
