Schitu Tarcău combines a precisely dated monastic history with a wooden church in the rocky Tarcău Valley and challenging mountain trails. When planning your trip, it is worth considering cultural history and longer outdoor activities separately: the monastery church was consecrated in 1833, while each of the challenging mountain trails described takes at least six hours. This lets you consciously choose whether to focus your stay on architectural history, the valley or the mountains.
Monastic History and Church Architecture
The Mănăstirea Sihăstria Tarcăului monastery is first mentioned in a document from March 1832. Its monastery church was built in 1833 by the hieroschemamonk Avramie together with other donors; it was consecrated on 9 July 1833. This sequence distinguishes the monastery’s first recorded mention from the church’s construction and consecration.
The wooden church “Duminica Tuturor Sfinților” stands in a broad clearing in the rocky Tarcău Valley. Its cruciform ground plan, with pronounced side apses, adds a distinctive architectural feature to its historical significance. Visitors interested in cultural heritage will find both a clear point of reference in time and a distinctive architectural form here.
Getting There and the Landscape
Five kilometres from Bicaz, access is via the DN15 national road. Travelling in the direction of Bicaz–Piatra Neamț, turn onto the DC135 local road; after another 15 kilometres, you reach Schitu Tarcău. For navigation, it helps to keep this sequence of national road, turn-off and local road in mind. Check road conditions before setting out, as they may change.
The road through the Tarcău Valley passes through Schitu Tarcău and follows the Tarcău along meadows and sheer granite and sandstone walls. Near Mănăstirea Sihăstria Tarcăului are also the valley of the Bolovăniş stream, with a waterfall, and a stretch of gorge cut into solid sandstone. Further afield is the Goșmanu forest reserve, with centuries-old spruces, firs and beeches. Alongside the rocky river valley, the waterfall, gorge and old-growth trees offer different ways to experience the natural surroundings.
Mountain Trails and Events
Several challenging mountain trails start at or near Mănăstirea Sihăstria Tarcăului; each takes at least six hours. Plan any such trail as a longer activity. Trail conditions and markings may change, so it is worth checking the latest information beforehand. At a junction, a forest road also branches off to the left; after 24 kilometres, it leads to Vârful Goșmanu, at 1,305 metres, and the forest reserve of the same name.
The Maraton Tarcău mountain race may also be useful when planning your dates: the 2026 edition was its fourth, with the start and finish at Mănăstirea Schitu Tarcău. If a later edition is relevant to your trip, check the dates and registration options for that year. Overall, Schitu Tarcău gives you two clearly distinct options for planning your stay: the history and architecture of its churches, or longer trails through the mountain scenery.
