Hoteni can be explored through three distinct themes: the protected Tăurile, the history of the wooden church “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril,” and the spring festival tradition of Tânjaua de pe Mara. There are also practical route details: a circular trail of about two kilometres that takes approximately one hour, and a hiking trail marked with a red cross from the church to the Tăurile. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Hoteni, you can consider the village in terms of culture, nature and your own interest in regional traditions.

A wooden church with a history rooted in the village

The wooden church “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril” dates back to 1790. At the end of the 19th century, it was brought to Hoteni from Slatina, north of the Tisza. It is still used regularly for services, with Orthodox and Greek Catholic services taking turns. Its date and relocation tell of different chapters in its history, while the regular services show that it continues to serve a religious purpose. For a cultural stay, the church can thus be appreciated both for its history and for its role today.

Tânjaua de pe Mara: A spring custom and festival celebration

The Tânjaua de pe Mara tradition is preserved in Hoteni as a spring festival. It honours the villager who was the first to plough in spring. This agricultural connection is therefore a central part of the festival custom. For more than forty years, the tradition has been carried on through a public performance of regional folk songs and dances.

The festival celebration includes carts pulled by a yoke and decorated with green birch branches, ribbons and colourful cloths. The tribute, music, dance and decorated carts show different aspects of the same tradition: its connection to fieldwork as well as its public cultural expression. If you would like to plan your trip around Tânjaua de pe Mara, check the event date in advance.

Protected natural area and trails

The Tăurile, also known as Tinoavele plutitoare de la Hoteni, form a protected natural area of local interest within Hoteni. The “Valea Cosăului (Breb): Tăurile și Tinovul Hoteni” excursion route runs from Hoteni via Breb to the Tăurile of Hoteni and Tinovul Hoteni, and then returns to Breb. The circular trail to the Tăurile and Tinovul Hoteni is about two kilometres long and takes approximately one hour. Highlights along the route include the flora typical of the wetlands and peat bogs in these locations.

A hiking trail from the church in Hoteni to the Tăurile Hoteni is marked with a red cross. For planning purposes, the circular trail has approximate distance and duration details; on the marked hiking trail, the church, destination and trail marker are the specific points of reference. The information therefore answers different questions about choosing a route, without confusing the trail’s length with its markings.
