Firiza offers several different starting points for planning a trip: nature at Lacul Firiza, activities on and by the water, and exercise on guided tours or selected routes. Traditional houses in Firiza provide a cultural counterpoint. Duration, group size and planning status vary across these options; the details below can help you choose a focus that suits the time you have available.
Forest Landscape and Wildlife
The area around Lacul Firiza and its surrounding forests is considered a habitat for protected species such as the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) and lynx (Lynx lynx). The tree cover includes beech and spruce forests, as well as hornbeam, sessile oak, birch and alder. This connects the natural setting with specific landscape and plant features, rather than focusing only on the lake.
Boat Trips and Water Sports
The electric boat trip on Lacul Firiza lasts 45 to 60 minutes and requires at least four people. It is considered suitable for all family members. The audio guide includes, among other things, the story of the sunken church tower in the lake. This combines a manageable time commitment with a cultural story that is part of the experience on the water.
Those who would like to explore the lake in a rental watercraft can choose from single- or double-person kayaks, stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) and rowing boats for two to four people at Simared. These stated capacities make group size a practical factor in choosing. Unlike the electric boat trip, guests can decide for themselves which of the available watercraft they would like to use.
Activities on Courses and Trails
Jungle Park offers outdoor challenge courses and ziplines between the trees. At Simared, children can ride electric CF-Moto ATVs on specially designed courses. The North Quest accompanies them throughout the experience and provides guidance on safe and proper use.
The guided e-bike tours with The North Quest also cover a range of riding styles: options include relaxed rides with scenic views, as well as technical trails and flowing routes.
Trails and Cultural Destinations
A description published in October 2025 gives the first 2 km section of the Poteca Lacului Firiza as linking Complex Turistic Simared with Valea Romană, and describes it as suitable for walking and trail running. Check current conditions before setting out. The planned overall route is a separate matter: the Poteca Lacului Firiza is intended to be a marked trail approximately 10 km long, circling the lake and suitable for walking, cycling or running. The first section and the planned full route are therefore different details for route planning.
A description published in 2015 lists a blue triangle and a red dot as the trail markers for the “Baraj Firiza–Vidra–coada lacului” route; a blue C marker is also indicated for cyclists. Have the markers confirmed on site. A description of an excursion in the Igniș Mountains published in 2014 offers a cultural connection, listing traditional houses in Firiza among its destinations.
